Very scenic, easy hike along Black River. Not much elevation gain, not very technical, though there are some muddy areas from springs. It's a popular hike with lots of traffic, especially on weekends. We added the West Fork loop to our hike to make it a little longer, it actually was a little misleading once you get up to the high field area, apparently we were suppose to split off uphill, but there is a distinct trail with carins continuing into the field to a gate in the fence that stretches across the field... once at the gate the trail disappeared and we brought up the Alltrails app to learn we missed the uphill junction that eventually takes you to an old forest road that is the trail that loops back around.

HikingGreat!

My two kids (13 and 15), dog and I hiked this trail today and it was wonderful! We drove out from Show Low and got to the trail head around 9:30 and got one of the last parking spots in the small parking lot/turnout. The Lot was full and people were parking on the sides of the gravel road when we got back, so go early if you want easy parking (It was a holiday weekend though). We took the trail along the river both out and back and loved everything about it! No bugs, cool breeze, some muddy and rocky areas but nothing too difficult. Weather was perfect with lots of clouds and there is on/off shade the length of the trail. It's a bit confusing where the trail actually 'ends' but we stopped at around 2.6 miles where the trail starts heading away from the river. total distance was 5.25 miles. We saw some people as we were heading out but LOTS of people coming as we were hiking back, so glad we left early. Highly recommend this trail if you are in the area or don't mind a little road trip - scenery makes it worth it!

My favorite trail in the White Mountains. An easy out n back at about 5.4 mi, 300’ elevation loss in, 300’ gain back. This trail has ups and downs through gnarled tree roots, scrambles over some more difficult rocks (for older folks), and marshy sections, depending on the last rain. The trail is mostly unshaded but every time I’ve done it there’s been a pleasant breeze. I had the pleasure this time around to share the trail with a small herd of cattle for almost a mile, I ran into them lounging around a clearing at the 1 mile point in, and on the way back they had moved down the trail and were drinking from the river. When I passed them, they turned back onto the trail and surrounded me, herding me back to the clearing they were in at first. I can’t guarantee you will get cows for trail guides, but I recommend a try anyway.

Great trail, gorgeous, incandescent bucolic. It was an easy trail, some very brief rock scrambles, we hiked on the service road, then hiked down to the trail that snakes along the river after the gate. Gorgeous. We’d definitely come back and hike it again.

Great trail. Pick up the trail that runs along the stream at the gate otherwise you will be hiking above the creek. Easy and gorgeous. We were the last ones on the trail at 4 pm on a Tuesday so we saw an elk family drinking from the stream with their newborn. Flowers, babbling creek, birds, elk and views for days. My favorite.

Such a beautiful hike! You’re next to the West Fork of the Black River the entire hike - the sound & sights of the water are so relaxing. Lots of shade, no downed trees, plenty of wildflowers. Two dogs did great on this trail. Would do it again for sure.

Great trail with great views. There seems to be two parallel routes (at least for a portion of the trail), one is down by the creek and the other is a service road up the mountain. A few parts were a bit muddy and there were some downed trees, but other than that the trail was in good shape.

Nice peaceful hike along a stream, however, you do need to navigate your way around fallen trees that are still on the trail.

Beautiful trail. It must be amazing in spring because it passes through a number of meadows. We hiked it the second week in October and the aspen were in full color. The trail follows the West Fork Black River and has numerous places to stop and take in the sites. Saw elk and lots of raptors. An easy hike with almost no elevation gain. There were a few places with wet/muddy passage but were easily trekked across with water-resistant boots. (If I had worn my breathable trailrunners, my feet would have been drenched, but no problems in my Merrells.)

Backpacking

Quiet and calm! Obviously a frequent trail for locals and game but we saw only a handful of other hikers. Found a couple of creekside campsites and loved it. Definitely a beginner backpacking location. Yeah, it’s a drive from metro area but the peaceful and pastoral environment is well worth the time.

The elevation makes it easy/moderate. Pretty place. The trail continuing along the river after 2.2 miles is really pretty destroyed by a rockslide. Otherwise it would be a nice hike out to the road leading south out of Big Lake.

This trail followed the creek as it moved through meadows of wildflowers and ferns. I was feeling the effects of the elevation so I appreciate that more climbing wasn’t needed on this very scenic trail. Great hike for dogs, too!

Absolutely beautiful! The trail along the river was easy to follow and smooth on my dog’s paws but for a couple rocky (not bad) spots! There were wild flowers everywhere & the river was so clear! A couple people were fly fishing & only saw 6 other people total! Worth the drive! A hidden gem! So glad I went! Walking back in the sprinkles of rain enhanced the fragrance of the greenery & flowers! Don’t quite know where “the end” was we went 2.5 miles & turned around which took 2. hours total.

Beautiful! We took our 3 kids who proclaimed this their “new favorite hike!” Green, lots of flowers, little waterfalls, basically flat. The trailhead parking across the street from the actual trailhead, which is further west. It took us some looking to find it.

Love this hike for an easy out and back. It’s mostly flat and follows the beautiful flowing river. It’s a very green area in the late summer with lots of wildflowers.
