Great Sunday morning hike. Started out at 6:00am and was the only one there until the last mile. I hiked the Metate trail loop and finished with the Elephant loop. All the creek crossings are flowing with about foot deep of ice cold water. I plan on going back to the Spur Cross again soon.

This is now one of my favorite hikes. I love how the terrain keeps changing. We went in Dec the weather was perfect.

Great trail for anyone looking for a doable challenge! The whole trail is rocky but manageable and not super over grown by cacti or brush. In the Spur Creek Conservation Area it is wide and maintained. In Tonto National Forest it is a narrow footpath with larger rock. We did the loop counterclockwise and I would recommend that anyone who wants to get the harder sections done at the start of the hike or who prefers to scramble up rather than down do it that direction too. Both directions have elevation changes but those in the northeast section of the trail are the most aggressive. They are continuous steep sections and there is no shade to be found so be prepared either way! There are stunning views and tons of cool vegetation the length of the trail. Elephant mountain is visible along the backside when going counterclockwise and the cacti are giant and the brush is thriving! Absolutely would do this trail again!

Went to Spur Cross today. The wash across Spur Cross was dry as a bone. Saw it running in January. Crossed Metate, and wound up on Tortguga to Elephant Mountain. Tortuga, of course, is marked Primitive Trail-Use at Your Own Risk. It is rocky and very rough, but no rattlesnakes today anyway. We made it to the turn to Elephant Mountain and the link to the Tonto National Forest, but that was as far as we went. Then right back to Spur Cross and back to parking. I am such a wimp! I have been thinking about doing Skull Mesa and Elephant Mountain for the last two years, but so far have avoided like the plague. Oh well, maybe some day.

Great moderate trail. Cools by the creek. Nice change of scenery.
