Definitely worth the views at the top. The perfect cinder cone and the crater is amazing, and you can see the lava flow, San Francisco Peaks, rim of the Grand Canyon, and the Painted Desert in the distance. Trail is a bit tricky to navigate, and difficult if you aren’t used to hiking on loose cinders. Expect to slide back quite a bit for every step you take going up. Definitely wear boots that protect your ankles and pants for this.

Follow the 4 wheel drive tracks up the SW side. Reach the summit of that and follow the trails up the volcanic rocks. Walked the rim of crater to get the entire panorama. About 40% is a bit slow going. Then it was a quick slide down for me but not my wife.

The angle of assent is steep and the trail is faint at best. Volcanic rocks and pebbles make footing tricky. Count on back sliding quite a bit. Like climbing up a steep sand dune. The view from the top is amazing. You can see the lava field that spread northwest. You can see the rim of the Grande Canyon. Beautiful view of the San Francisco range. The descent is easy and rather quick in comparison. Just side slip back down. Try to follow a trail to avoid unnecessary erosion.
