This trail begins at the Icehouse Canyon CCC recreation area. The signage is very minimal (but gets better on the mountain). You need to know that Sixshooter Canyon is trail #197 and Icehouse Canyon is trail #198. Nice red maples currently (Oct 13th). Saw 1 deer and a small troop of coati near the trail I hiked this as a loop along with Icehouse and a side trip to the look at the radio towers and see the view from the East end of Pinal Peak. Ended up at just under 15 miles (with 4000' elevation). Recording of that loop is in the "Icehouse Canyon Trail 198" section.

I followed the directions from All trails and it led me to an area that was heavily used by quads and people in Razors. I asked and they told me to go towards Pinal county, but I ended up not finding the trailhead. anyone have any better directions than what is on here?

This was a decent trail. I am not sure I would rate it as hard but I did turn around about 5 miles or so in. That last little bit on this trail map may have qualified it as hard but really it wasn’t that difficult overall. There was a steady incline most of the hike. There was little shade the first two miles which in turn means there was little to now shade the last two miles out. I drank 3 liters and rand out about a mile before the end. The pine trees where nice scenery. They were some great valley views as well. I can’t say it’s a hike I would do again but it was worth doing at least once. They trail did have some overgrown areas but nothing too bad. There were pockets where the bugs were really bad. I wished I’d had bug spray. With all that combined, I’m giving it a solid 4.

We completed about 5.5 miles ( up and back) of the 197 trail picking it up at the bridge where it crosses FR 112. 1600 ‘ ascent in the first two miles but nice return! Trail is in decent shape but there’s loose rock , rotten granite and other slippery stuff. About 50-60% shaded, creek next to much of it and great views and scenery. Saw an acorn woodpecker and western tanagers for a nice bonus.

Loved seeing the different biomes as I got higher. Lots of smooth, pine needle covered single track. Not too many downed trees. I saw nobody all day.

Start at CC Camp. First mile or so can seem kind of boring then once you're in the trees it's a different trail. Beautiful and difficult.
