This trail travels through one of the most peaceful and verdant canyons below the Rim. Rocky Mountain maples, alders and oaks abound near the creek. Mixed conifers spread out on the canyon walls. Several dripping springs make Pine Canyon the epitome of a storybook setting abundant with yellow columbines and scarlet monkey flowers.
This is an enjoyable trail with not too much traffic. Expect to see deer, elk, and javelina around dawn or dusk.
Pine Canyon trail probably should be four stars. Only a three because it did not have a spectacular element to distinguish it from its surroundings. It was a pleasant hike of some distance. Only saw a couple hikers early on. Most seem to hike out a couple miles and turn around. So, I had a lot of solitude past the first couple miles. Greatly enjoyed the hike.
