Tips

Many hikers head for the hills in search of solitude, but if you're planning to hike to the summit of Piestewa Peak you'd do better to bring with you your community spirit - this is a very busy trail. Hikers, walkers, sightseers and runners alike flock to this prominent peak like moths to a flame, drawn here in part because of it proximity to the city of Phoenix. Despite the crowds this mountain can still be a lot of fun, especially when you extend your adventure along the much less travelled Circumference Trail which traces a flanking route around the mountain. Parking is a challenge, as is understanding the parking restrictions that prevail. Please note the entrance to the parking lot closes at 7pm. The Park does not close until 11pm.

Tips: - Although the summit is only a two mile round trip, carrying water is always highly recommended for the Arizona heat.

Hot summer trek... but worth it. After the peak the solace of the loop is perfect along with the cool breeze on the back side. Be prepared for no shade!

Busy, I thought it was pretty easy. Wouldn’t do it in the heat though

This is always a great hike! It’s a gradual incline- kind of feels like a stair stepper type hike. Not a lot of shade. One of my favorites in Phoenix.

We woke up around 5 to do this trail. The hike to the peak was PACKED. But the loop around like a desert (pun intended). Take water, beware of jagged rocks, and loose gravel! Overall was good hike and a great sweat fest!

My favorite of all the Phoenix Mountain Preserve trails. The climb to the peak at the beginning sets the tone for the Freedom Loop. Not many people on the backside, making it more enjoyable than the peak.

Best time to hike this trail is at 1800. Be aware of snakes. Ran into a brown rattle snake.

This trail is hard and the harder part is coming down. It’s a tedious decline. Bring lots of water.

I didn't find this trail hard, after havin been to Echo Camelback Mountain, but definitely gets the heart pumpin, as it's all uphill. I started around 6 am and it was pretty busy already. It's a good workout and lots of shade around this time. Beautiful view! Free parking!
