Heavily trafficked until the saddle, after that it is much lighter. We only encountered two different groups briefly after the saddle. To the left of the saddle there is a slot you can scramble up and through to get the the trail BUT you can also walk to the left of it which is easier to get through. Have your map open once you reach this point to connect to the trail. It was initially somewhat tricky to find the trail. Once connected we came across some cairns that started going up—we followed them. Ended up going too far up which led us to be on the wrong side of large hoodoos. This wasn’t a huge deal, we just ended up doing a loop around to reconnect (think we may have done part of the route used coming from Carney Springs). We were definitely off trail and had some bouldering and bushwhacking to reconnect, which added a mile or two to the trip. Initially were confused as to where the roost was—map is not exact. To get to the actual Roost, look for a slight slope DOWNWARD, it goes towards large rocks and you’ll notice two pines near the rocks—they almost act as a goal post. Walk between them to find the entrance to the roost. You might have to search a bit to figure out how to get down into it, but take your time and you will figure it out. On the way back we were able to find the trail and it was easy to get back from there.

This route has so many fantastic views and rock formations. You will never be bored. There is a lot of steep trail and scrambling coming up Carney Springs. Look for Robbers Roost it's a treat to see.

Great trail! Started at 8:30am and it took us 2 1/2 hours up and back great views the whole way. When you get to the saddle there are a couple different routes/trails you can take which got confusing. We decided to just head back down before it got too busy. Definitely will go back and go all the way to the needle :)

First to Review

The roost is hard to find but it is truly scenic and not too hard. The first time I went there I was with a large group who knew the location. The second time I went after a heavy rain and it was very foggy. The fog actually made it kind of eerie in a cool kind of way.
