So sad to see the fire damage on both Overton and Go John Trail at my favorite Maricopa county park. The views are still spectacular.

Encountered a rattlesnake on the edge of the trail, but was able to go around it safely. Compared to other “moderate” hikes, I would classify this as a long easy trail with some elevation gain. Nice views. Saw remains from a recent wildfire, which added to the scenery. $7 fee to get into the park.

An enjoyable loop that provides a great escape, especially considering that it’s a bit shorter. Hiked it early and the rising sun really made the surrounding mountains pop.

Love this trail. Did it counter this time and turned off for a bit onto Clay Mine Trail—never made it to the mine; and as it turns out would have led us back into the end of the Overton Trail. Several hikers , 3 mountain bikers.

Short trail, but a nice add-on to the many other trails in this regional park. Overton Trail is easy, nice views, and if hiked early morning provides some shade on much of the west side of the trail.

Easy trail loop. A little more hilly than it looks, so that was a nice surprise

Meant to do Quartz trail ~ there are 2 “Go John” trailheads in the parking lot, so we ended up on Overton.

A pretty trail, not one I would make an effort to drive to more than the one time.

Easy medium trail. Should be beautiful for wild flowers in spring with the amount of green plants present.

We’ve hiked Cave Creek before and liked it, especially for a regional park and when the wildflowers are in bloom. But today it was awful. They, sadly, allow horses on all the trails, and Overton was a river of horse dung. So was the portion of Go John we tried. There was no avoiding it. There was no stepping over it, just sloshing through it. Gross. And there was no avoiding the constant smell. I hike a lot - often on trails shared with horses - and have never seen it so stinking awful. There is a solution: reserve at least some of the trails for hikers only. We won’t be back.

My own combination of Go John North and Overton trail. I start with the Go John portion to get the majority of the elevation climb with over first and then meander my way down Overton.

Running

Beautiful views and well maintained. I ran the loop clockwise in the morning, next time I would run it counter-clockwise. I think the downhills that direction would be less rocky/slippery and the last mile would be shaded instead of direct sun.

Very cool trail. You will see a good amount of traffic, but the trails are well-suited for it. Nice views in all directions. You will have to pay the $7 park entry fee.

Great views! Plenty of parking and clean bathrooms at the nature center this morning. Only saw a few other people too.
