Munds Wagon, Cow Pies and Hangover Loop Trail is a 8.2 mile heavily trafficked loop trail located near Sedona, Arizona that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate. One of my favorites in Sedona! Not too many people and incredible views!!
Definitely a lot harder than the specs make it out to be. Keep an eye out for the trail - you’ll get lost in some places. Overall it was absolutely beautiful and would do it again!
Wow, beautiful trail. It really gets good at about 3 miles or so. The cow pies and hangover trail portion is epic. The part parallel to the road is not great, but certainly worth it to get the prettier sections. If you despise pink Jeep’s then you won’t love the portion by the road. Lots of “wheeee” excitement from the pink Jeep’s crowd. At least they’re having fun, lol. The hangover portion is a little dicey if you’re afraid of heights. Nothing too crazy, but a medium rating is only barely accurate. It’s a tougher medium from the perspective of exposure. My wife is afraid of heights and wasn’t thrilled with sections of it, but managed well. There are some mountain bikes on the trail as well. Can’t believe people would bike hangover! Anyway, great trail any highly recommended. I’ve hiked lots in Sedona and found this up there with some of the other great trails. See story highlights for photos/videos @mirelaofearth
The views on this trail are great, but half of the trail parallels the jeep road which makes for an annoying, loud, squeaky hike. Also, the hangover isn’t necessarily a feature to go and see on the hike, it’s just the name of a trail. This was confusing for us until we learned this. There are so many good hikes in Sedona that I would do over this one. The bright spot is that parking was easy to find even at noon.
**Not for those afraid of heights. I recommend going counter clockwise and taking Hangover first. Much easier to climb up than I imagine it to climb down. Breath-giving views in all directions, canyon sweeping and mesa climbing. We “hungover” the edge and gulped up the adrenaline and exhilaration.
I got there at 630 and was the 2nd car in the lot. I didnt do the full loop around because I couldn't find it...people coming in as I walked back were super nice. its a very beautiful trail.
Fantastic! Monday parking lot nearly empty at 7am. Do the loop! Go right
As others have mentioned, starting with Hangover is the way to go. in fact, if I did this again, I would do this as an out and back and just do Hangover. The views were surreal, and interesting terrain as you scale large sandstone boulders. I'm afraid of heights and at no point did I feel uneasy. The only reason I don't give it a full 5 stars is Cowpies was just a mundane slog through a mostly dried out creek bed next to the road where ATVs and Jeeps were endlessly whirring past and kicking up dust. The only argument for coming back via Cowpies is the practicality of it. It's shorter than backtracking Hangover. It's more shaded on a hot day. It's also less steep than coming via Hangover, so less wear and tear on your knees. If those things are of no concern to you, skip it! So to maximize your enjoyment, start early. And I mean EARLY. Parking lot was almost full at 6:45, and by mid-morning the crowds, Jeeps, ATVs, and helicopters have entered into the canyon like an invading army. Pack plenty of water. Full sun exposure on Hangover, and not a trail I'd want to do later in the day. Overall, this is one of the more unique and beautiful hikes I've done in Sedona and would totally recommend sans the Cowpies.
Awesome views, parking lot was full by 9 so get there early.
Amazing! Definitely worth the hike! Make sure to get there early to find parking (arrived at 8 and the lot was full). Would recommend going to the right (cow pies trail) at the y first then end with the hangover trail. Would also recommend wearing hiking boots or shoes with good grip because there are sections that are pretty steep. The view is breathtaking though!
All the other positive reviews were right! And Erin very glad we ran into you in Brins Mesa so you could explain further your excellent comments about vertigo!
Absolutely one of my favorites in Sedona. Great way to get a feel of the vortex and see many parts of Sedona. You have the best of two worlds with the red rocks during one part of the hike and the green vegetation on the other parts of the hike. The views are incredible. Good hike in the summer to get shade for part of the hike.
Absolutely breathtaking views!!! Best of any Sedona hike I’ve done yet, but do heed the other warnings if you have a legitimate fear of heights. The hangover portion of the trail is pretty high up there with a few spots where you’re sliding down boulders - I never felt unsafe but my husband has a fear of heights and he may have been freaking out a bit! But overall totally worth the hike. We also did the cow pies portion first which I think was ideal.
Started at 7am, back at trailhead by noon. 5 hour hike at a leisurely pace, taking time to admire the views. We only saw three other hikers for the first 3 hours. Views are amazing and diverse throughout. Footing was excellent along Hangover. Windy on the backside of Hangover - layer up. Took the loop clockwise - found it easier to go up the steeper parts this way while traveling against the mountain bike traffic. Keep an eye out for the white blazes, we got off trail a couple times on the backside of Hangover, following a mountain bike trail instead. Outstanding hike - closer to 9 miles when you include getting side tracked a couple times.
