The description of this trail is misleading. It might be 2030 feet of elevation gain starting on Mount Lemmon. But running it backwards it was greater than 2030 meters of elevation gain (we logged about 11,000 feet) making it especially brutal. The map directions are spot on, however there’s no reason to take the Meadow Trail 5a. The Mount Lemmon Trail #5 starts at the same Trail head. We took a wrong turn, our mistake not the maps, which cost us about 7 miles turning this into a 20+ mile day. Beautiful views, and running during monsoon season was an added bonus. We’ll definitely take another crack at this. 3 L of water was not enough, especially with our detour, and make sure to pack enough fuel if you’re going to try this as a day trip.

Easy to follow trail and bang on GPX track. Bring 5-6 liters of water (winter). Beautiful change from low desert to high pine forest.
