Enjoy this trail...start at the trailhead off Hwy. First 20 steps probably the hardest but then you get used to it. Trail levels out at a couple spots. Once at the top of the Rim, walk across the street to the actual military sinkhole. Beautiful views!

A rewarding rim country hike leads to amazing views of the Tonto National Forest

We started at the top and for the first half mile or so it was very pleasant. Good trail and since scenery (look to your right and you’ll see how the rim is constructed.) Then we got into a steep and very rocky section that just went on forever. Not much fun since you’re constantly looking down to place your feet properly. After about 1.5 miles we decided it wasn’t fun anymore and turned back uphill. The oft-mentioned noise from highway 260 in ant really that bad. It was mostly drowned out by the crunch of the rocks. Great exercise and some nice views but we figured there were more enjoyable hikes in the area and counting to Preston just to get to the parking lot at the bottom was not worth the effort or time.

This is supposed to be a review of Military Sinkhole Trail off the 260 near Payson. It is not Granite Mountain in Prescott. Not sure why it says it is Granite Mountain? was a nice hike with lots of gradual ups and downs. Toughest part was near the end with the most incline. AllTrails says 4.4 miles, but we clocked 5.5 miles, not 4.4. Good parking lot and bathroom at trailhead. Not five stars because you can hear traffic noise through much of the hike and you can drive to the scenic overlook, don’t actually have to hike to get there.

This is a nice hike with lots of gradual ups and downs. Very pretty and lots of shade. Decent parking lot and bathroom at trailhead off 260. We would have given this 5 stars, but there is traffic noise most of the way.

One of the most beautiful trails right off the highway. The only thing from being completely serene is the traffic noise from 260. Not too difficult but gorgeous spring views. Picture perfect weather too.

Not a real stellar trail but ok. Pretty easy-moderate throughout but the elevation does add a degree of difficulty if you're a flatland person. Not terribly scenic until the top, which brings you to a viewpoint you could drive to. I rather prefer trails that bring me places only reachable on foot, although this time of year the rim road is closed so technically it still fits the bill.

Tough climb for end of long run. Loose rocks on much of the trail.

Beautiful in the fall. All the leaves were red and yellow. Pretty good incline halfway through
