Mostly a dirt road. This is a scenic historic drive best done in a high clearance vehicle. Four wheel drive is not required. The route crosses desert and grass lands leading to a low mountain pass of oaks, pinyon pine and juniper trees between Tombstone and Sulphur Springs Valley in the Dragoon mountains. An area used by Cochise, leader of the Chiricahua Apache. Parts of the route were also used by the US Cavalry between Fort Bowie and the San Pedro Valley.
