What a great hike but difficult! Bring plenty of water! We did a balloon trail, started at Canyon Lake. When we reached the highest point, maybe 1 mile in, there are amazing views of Canyon Lake, Four Peaks and Weaver's Needle. A little further, there is also great view of the Battleship Mountain before we descended to the dry river bed. Went off trail and reached an amazing emerald pool at the end of the "box". The water was too cold for a swim but nevertheless dipped our feet in and cooled off before we headed back out along a faint trail (there were some cairns) and connect back on boulder canyon trail. Took us 7 hours total.

Well this was a great hike. We did this as a long loop at 15.73 miles. We started at First WaterTrailhead. We head down Second Water until we reached Boulder Canyon Trail. Now we went North first just to see the Indian Paint Mine as we knew this was going to be a loop. And if we didn't see it now we wouldn't see it at all. We hiked on through La Barge Canyon this was the best part of the hike. The canyon was very beautiful in the beginning. Then the hard work started as we worked our way through the canyon. Once we reached the end I decided to take Calvary Trail thru Marsh Valley and connect to the Dutchman Trail. From the Dutchman Trail we connected with Bull Pass Trail until it reconnected with the Dutchman Trail and head back to First Water TrailHead parking Lot.
I hope you enjoy the pictures as this was a awesome hike.

It's a very long trail and rather difficult - mostly due to the distance. Lots of boulder hopping on the creek bed and you really need to know how to find your way because the trail isn't always well marked - so keep your wits with you. Especially on the trail back if you do the balloon loop. Very grateful for the rock cairns. The La Barge box canyon is very beautiful in the morning.
