Great hike, if you want the challenge of Tom's Thumb from the North but longer distance and not have to deal with 100's of people on the trail. Starts of easy up Levee trail from 104th street trailhead, left on Paradise trail that connects to Gateway then in .2 you turn right onto Bell Pass trail and continue a gradual climb. About half way up the climb starts getting steeper up to the pass. The last .75 will be a real challenge, but Once at the Pass you have fantastic views of Four Peaks to the East and back over Phoenix to the west. On a clear day you can see Glendale Stadium and the White Tank mountains along with downtown Phoenix. The trek back down is almost as hard as the climb. Edit: Trail description shows no shade however if you hike early AM you are in the early morning shade.
