This is a beautiful area of upper Sonora Desert. I quickly tired of walking in the soft sand in the wash and turned off to walk up a side trail along a ridge where there was much better views of distant mountains including Four Peaks. I came here looking to film wildflowers and the hills on either side of this wash were the best patches of flowers I could find anywhere I looked northeast of Phoenix: https://vimeo.com/325588047

Nice walk, but be prepared for walking the entire way in a loose gravel wash. Nice views of surrounding peaks.

Excellent hike. Coming back from the Verde river is more challenging then the way down. Did not see a single other hiker. Some of the trail markers (trail 532) are hidden, so take note of the path for the way back. The parking lot is not open, there is still a road closed gate as of Oct 20, 2018. Plenty of parking on road by trailhead.

The "Road Closed" sign seemed to only pertain to cars. Otherwise, the sign post at the 'trailhead' says only that the area was closed until some time in 2014 during some sort of construction. Other than that, I didn't hike the whole way, but I did have a great walk along the wash / Forest Road 532. There were a few turn offs for other roads, but I stuck to the main one. It was beautiful, with only a number of birds and wildflowers around.

I attempted to go to this trail today and it's closed as of 2014 there is a gate that prevents any vehicle from going past it but it looks like it could be open to hikers
