Tips

There are many trails in this area that are worthy of more hiking. The Hidden Valley loop offers interesting tunnels, dry waterfalls, and a squeeze through Fat Man's pass. While it might be tempting, it is not recommended to hike off trail in this area as it is very difficult to make any progress and easy to lose sight of the trail. Given the close proximity with Phoenix, you should be ready to share this trail with many others, especially on nice winter weekends. Bring your camera as there are many opportunities for great photos.

Open sunrise to sunset

Ranger Office Phone: (602) 262-7393 Hours for all trailhead areas and entrances: 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. (entrance gates close). Trails remain open until 11 p.m.

Bring food and water and be prepared for a steep climb during the first mile of the Mormon Trail. While well established, this trail is rugged with many rock steps, patches of loose sand, and tight switchbacks. There are also many side trails worth exploring, be sure to remember where you are and how to get back to the main trail.

HikingGreat!

I like this trail. Everyone seems cool and says hello as you pass them by. There are a few nice spots to sit down along the way. The Hidden Valley tunnel is a nice shaded spot to take a break. The parking lot is small buy there is also parking on 24th street. At the bottom of the trail is a small covered area with a trail map and a few benches and a water fountain.

Nice hike. Well worth it. Cool views of Phoenix. Lots of squirrels and lizards around. Tunnel was awesome. Make sure to wear good hiking boots. You can easily twist an ankle. A bit steep at first and it is kind of a rocky trail.

Nice views and cool rock formations near Fatman's Pass. It starts out uphill right away but more level along the loop portion. The trail is a little difficult to find on the east side of Fatman's pass but I was able to pick it up again using the alltrails map. I started out at about 8:30 am and it was really hot on the way back down. I suggest starting earlier in the morning and bring PLENTY of water!

easy to moderate difficulty, the beginning has an incline and is rocky, some back and forth going up the trail, but much easier when you get to the loop.

Great hike. My 9 yr old and 7 yr old made it, barely. But it was a great hike. Definitely take the right loop. It would’ve been tough to climb up the slide rocks you come across. Highly recommended but be ready it’s tough.

This trail was amazing. The beginning is quite a bit of incline with a lot of rocks and back and forth, but once reaching the plateau and hitting the loop, the trail takes on a scenic beauty that is majestic in many ways. Fat Man’s Pass was fun to squeeze through and play around in. The Hidden Valley Tunnel was also very enjoyable with many great photo opportunities. This is a great hike to do solo, with friends or family. I highly recommend it.

This is one of my favorite trails in the area! You definitely feel the incline that kicks your booty but then after you get past that it’s much easier. You go through a cave (shade!!! Ahhhh....) and squeeze through Fat Man’s Pass. You climb up a couple of boulders, too! This trail has it all! The only issue is the trail stops being marked for a little bit, but we never really got lost.

Fun hike with great views of the the cityscape. A real gem of South Mountain park. It starts with a Rough uphill. Go when it is cool or when it is hot only if you are and experienced desert hiker. Lots of huge chuckwalla prevalent throughout the area. At the split, Go right and head to Fat Man’s pass first. If you wont fit or are reluctant, climb up the left side of the boulders of and come down the other side. Enjoy the plants of Hidden Valley and make your way through the “caves” made by the various stacked boulders. If it isn't crowded this is a good spot to get shade and take a sip of water. Depending on if you go left or right in this area it can be steep. Finally, descend through the “tunnel” completely shaded and awesome to behold and loop back to the main trail you came up. Take your time going down the steep hill you started your climb with.

The first part of the trail is all upward hiking. Some people may find it steep. Once you get up the trail, there is a sign pointing one way for the tunnel and another for Fat Man’s Pass. Either way you go it will loop around to the other but if you go the Fat Man’s Pass way you will be climbing down most of the rocks instead of climbing up. Admittedly the trail is a little harder to find and follow on the loop but not bad. During the hotter months, bring plenty of water! Actually bring plenty of water anytime.

Great trail I think we totally passed the Fat Man’s cave referred to the ascension was greater than 3 miles descended down another steep trail ~ 2.5 miles ended up on 19th street by BSA Heard Scout Pueblo campgrounds. Had to walk back to 24th street to parking lot where we started. Total hike 6.2 miles. Unless hikers turn around at the rocks in which I think is the cave this was 3 hour plus hike and wouldn’t classify it as moderate IMO.

This is one of the coolest hikes to do in Phoenix! Once you get to the top and enter hidden valley you'll go through a natural tunnel formed by rock slabs then do some climbing over more rock slabs then enter fat man's pass. Fun to do for kids and teens.

Great hike and a real workout! Switchbacks all the way up! At the top stay to your right to take Valley Loop to Fat Man’s Pass and the tunnel! Fun hike! Wish the grandkids had been with us! This trail is one of our top favorites now! I recommend starting early and taking plenty of water. It’s a short trail but a strenuous one and you will easily drink more than you think! Will do this one again, for sure!

If you go left around the loop you’ll be doing a lot of climbing up. If you go right you’ll be going down. I recommend going right
