Haunted Canyon Trail to Tonys Ranch is a 11.5 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Roosevelt, Arizona that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking and nature trips and is best used from February until November. Dogs are also able to use this trail.
Visitors must park at a locked gate and walk a mile to the trailhead. Hikers have reported that there is no clear entrance to the hike.
When you get to the steel bridge at the end of the directions take the fork in the road to the left instead of going over the bridge. The sign is kind of covered in trees.
So... All Trails map doesn’t get you to the cabin... close but still need to go further.. the map ends at the creek... keep going across, thru the campsites and make a left where the trail forks, basically, keep going on the unrecorded trail fork to the left ( black dashes), past the end of that trail to a large clearing, look for a very large sycamore....
This trail is easy and starts out on a flat forest service road for 1.7 miles. At the trailhead once you pass through the gate, it becomes and up and down trek on some loose rock but nothing too steep or slippery. You eventually drop down into the creek and hike along a damp dirt path that zig zags back and forth along the creek. There are occasional pink painted arrows and ribbons spotted here and there. A solid fail safe is to hike creek side if you're unable to find the trail. You'll eventually reach an area with campsites and cairns. If you want to see the ranch, do NOT follow the cairns. You have to jump back into the creek and look for footprints that will eventually land you into a grassy knoll. Keep going and you will see the ranch < 1/4 mile from the creek. It is an amazing place to explore!
Overall I enjoyed this trail! It was a little confusing to find at first. When you get to the narrow bridge (at the end of Apple Maps) don't drive over it, instead turn left right before and you'll find the "parking lot" for Haunted Canyon 203. From the parking lot it's about a 1.5 mile hike to the beginning of the trailhead, but it's a pretty walk along the creek! We walked about 2.5 miles on the official trail before heading back. We did not reach the cabin. The trail crosses the creek many times (in February there was very little if any water in the creek so easy to cross). We saw a handful of tagged cows before the official trailhead!
Awesome trail! Enough water in the creek to keep it interesting. Definitely going to make it back in the summer and fall.
Beautiful terrain, great work out, very cool old cabin! Will do again!!
3rd time. Good as always. First time hiking with no water in the creek. Backpacked in and camped over night! Good times!
