As of 2/23/2019 - users have reported that the road is closed 1/4 of the way in. This may be a seasonal closure to due to snow. Please contact the Tonto National Forest before attempting. This is a very popular scenic driving route through the Four Peaks Wilderness. There are several great hiking trails off of it. 4WD is not required but might be helpful. The route is mostly a dirt road. Dispersed camping allowed. Make sure to pack out all trash. Stay on marked roads and trails at all times. Located in Tonto National Forest. For current conditions call Mesa Ranger District (480) 610-3300. This is a graded dirt road but washed out and rutted in places. Four-wheel drive beneficial. Small stream crossings possible. Snow likely at top late fall and winter. The route described on this page is for driving. Hikers and mountain bikers can also use this road, but it wouldn't be too exciting. This route can also be started on the other end, at State Route 188.

Great views from the top of 4 peaks. Pretty mellow drive. I've seen cars parked at the top.

Took the Jeep to this great beginner trail for some 4th of July scenic driving, I think I saw 4 other vehicles the whole day. I would say if you are new to off road driving, start here. There are plenty of little side trails where you can test what your comfortable with, and heading back to the main trail is a simple task. Enjoyable trail for sure.

Fun first trail since buying my Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. Beautiful views and no traffic on a Friday day drive. After going from the 87 over to Roosevelt Dam and the 188 we headed north through Tonto Basin up to Payson then home to Fountain Hills. All in all about a 5-6 hour trip.

Awesome views from the top. Remember a light jacket because it could be a bit chilly.

This was a simple, almost just gravel road. Any SUV or truck would do just fine. The drive itself is a little boring until you get near the top and get a view of Roosevelt Lake which is absolutely beautiful. That beauty remains all the way back down the other side. The multitude of side trails seem to be quite a bit more difficult (fun if you have a properly equipped vehicle) but the drive itself is worth it just for the views.

Saturday 4/6/2019. Great ride at 4 Peaks. 67.5 miles. Stagged at first area off of 87 and rode over to Tonto Basin and had lunch at Butcher Hook and then rode back. took about 8 hours with lots of breaks. weather was great. looked like the rode was grated recently although it's still Rocky in areas. Tons of side by sides, quads, 4×4's and 2 mini vans (LMFAO). River in Tonto Basin was high. Maybe 2 or 3 feet so couldn't cross. had to take 188 to Butcher Hook.

Great day in the Four Peaks Wilderness! We drove from 87 to 188. We took a detour took Mazatzal divide trail to the dead end, what beautiful wilderness we have in our backyard!

Dry with some creek fords, some road maintenance going on, but all in all a smooth passage, with very little traffic, and lots of photo ops. While there may be times when four wheel drive is not absolutely necessary, it would not be the same kind of fun.

Trail is not complicated at all. I would imagine any 4x4 can make it. The road to the 188 has nice views and smoother than the 143 and happened to have some snow on it. Once you make it to that town there is a diner, a bar, a hardware store, and grocery store all in one. Great staff and food was good. You end up about 20 miles from Payson. Recommend for a scenic drive 17 Tacoma Off-Road 4x4 stock height 265/75/16 Wildpeak AT3

Is there a website with up to date status of the Four Peaks road other than here? Drove out there today, & it was closed. Would have been nice to know before I went. Thanks!

Beautiful easy drive, some nice pull out areas to take pictures camp, have lunch etc. Great examples of different biomes here in Arizona. Did the trail in late Feb. and had decent weather a little chilly but nice. Great views of the valley. Would recommend doing this as a long day trip starting at 143 going to Roosevelt lake, then going down 188 to do Apache Trailing coming back to phoenix for a nice big loop.

we we're so excited for this trail since it was supposed to go straight through to the 188 but it's closed 1/4 of the way through. I don't know if it's just because of the amount of snow that fell this past few days or what but we arrived to the gate and law enforcement there writing tickets to the few on ATVs on the other side of the gate. Hopefully the gate opens at again soon but right now it's an extremely busy dirt road. Again, I'm assuming its because of the snow.

My wife and I took this trail on as our first off road. just right as the trail progresses it gets a little more challenging but nothing outrageous. the views were spectacular even with the peaks socked in. we opted to turn around at 2 hours rather than continue to 188. 4x4 probably wasn't needed except in some mud as it had rained the prior day. Used a trail rated Rubicon.

any 2wd truck, jeep, suv will make it to the top. But don't try it in a stock car or minivan unless your willing to loose some front bumper wind skirt of maybe the bumper.

easy trail can be done with any suv. really nice pull off spots. ended up pitching a tent and staying the night right off the trail. you have to appreciate the view to enjoy this trail. otherwise its gonna be pretty boring

Let's be honest here. This is a "road", not a trail. It's a great choice for the "family SUV" if you want to take the family for a Sunday drive - nice views and a nice cool place to have a picnic at the summit. You'll get your SUV dusty, but if you're looking for an off-road excursion that takes any amount of skill and a vehicle not designed to get groceries, there are many better choices in the same vicinity.
