Dome Mountain is a 6.2 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Mesa, Arizona that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as difficult. The trail is primarily used for hiking and horses and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
Great views in all directions when on top. The road portion is not great, but the hiking trail is enjoyable.
One of my favorites in the area! It was surprising and a special item at the top. It was about 1.3 miles in when you stopped getting attacked my atvs. However, they were all super nice and slowed down around you (it’s their path not hikers). The rest of the trail was peaceful and only saw 2 people.
Really cool. First part is shared w ATVs like people are saying. Then you are basically scrambling and going pretty vertical for about 1.5-2.5 miles to get to the top. I went alone but was wishing I had brought someone. Some bees at the top started showing up in larger quantities so I left almost as soon as I got there. It’s apparent that this trail is rarely used. Cheers happy hiking!
Great hike, no traffic once off the OVH roads. Last 3/4 to mile is nearly straight up, recommend trekking polls , but great vistas when you hit the top. Great way to start 2021.
It is a 7.4 Mike hike. all trails is terrible with distance. the first section is forest service roads that are shared with atvs and other motorized entertainment. once you get off the road, it's pretty easy going until the last minute or so. make sure you carefully follow the cairns and the spray painted white lines and arrows. we both agreed we needed gloves before doing this again because you are going to want to be on all fours both ascending and descending. the views from the top are spectacular and well worth the trouble
As others have said, the first part is shared with the ATVs. No big deal, just give them space. Every one I encountered slowed down and waved. Most said hi and made sure I was okay. If you want to go off path, stay left of marker 1356, then make your way north. I found a foot path about 1/4 mile west of the main trail with no traffic at all.
Ah, the mountain dome at Dome Mountain owned by Doug Dimmadome owner of the Dimmsdale Dimmadome
So I guess I didn't record the whole way. Main review in previous post....
The actual hike is the last mile-ish when you get off the dirt road onto the very narrow trail marked by two cairns (one plain rocks and one spray painted red rocks) on the right. Easily missed! So the 2+ miles walk on the dirt road to the trail was sometimes sandy and very rocky-- meant for OHV/ATVs. If I could've skipped this part I would've. BUT the actual trail and scenery and terrain TOTALLY made it worth it!! So fun! Very steep at the very end. Narrow trail thru chollas, up rock face, along mountain side, sometimes along the edge, thru tall thorny shrubbery and grasses in some areas. Follow the spray painted red arrows and spray painted white lines. Incredible 360 views at the top!! (with two chairs- cute added touch) Be careful coming down especially! Loose rock!!
Insanely easy trail. First few miles are boring and shared with ATVs and dirt bikes, and the trail is very hard to find because of all the dirt bike paths. We made it all the way to the top but it wasn’t worth it if you’re looking for anything harder than a leisurely stroll.
Nice hike. Easy to start for the first 2 miles, then a little more difficult. The last half mile was hard since it was mostly up hill but this was quite an enjoyable hike.
Loved it ... however not super clearly marked. Have to pay attention, or you get sideways .
Couldn’t find the trail yesterday - came back today. Let me make it easy on you to find the trail. Don’t try to follow AllTrails at the beginning. About .4 mi from the gate there is a road (FS 1356) on your right. Well marked. Take it. It meets back up with the map on AllTrails and doesnt take you out of the way. Once you meet the trail on AllTrails on 1356 you can follow AllTrails from there. You’ll take 1356 til you get to a circle clearing. Go straight. There is a sign that says no motorized vehicles. Again, the map will help you make the decision from here. You’ll follow that trail til you get to some rocks on the right with a red arrow. From here it’s UP. I thought the trail was pretty easy to follow even at this point - where the trail kinda disappears there are cairns to help & red/white markers to point you in the right way. I paused my tracking when I went left to look at the overhang and forgot to restart it when finishing the very top :(
5 star for the adventure. All Trials seems to have the start wrong. After finding the road, easy to get off trail watching scenery. Watch for the small trail turning off road before the ATV trail makes a quick descent. LOVED the chairs at the top of the climb!!!
