Very good hiking area with a good range of difficulty levels. Starts with a short climb from the parking lot and some reasonable elevation changes. Back side of loop fairly flat with another slope up to meet Dixie Loop for return. If you bring a dog, it better be very leash controlled due to close proximity of Cholla cactus on trail sides. Observed some Cholla "pears" loose on trail. Good hiker shoes with firm sole recommended due to rockiness.
Love this area. There are a lot of trails off of Dixie Mountain Loop trail head. Desert Tortoise is one of them. Just beautiful! A small incline in the beginning, but the rest is pretty easy. Trail is rock, so watch your step. Beautiful flowers and various types of cactus. Also saw some lizards, family of owls, quail, beetles and caterpillars. Will definitely go back and hike all the trails there!
New trail area with plenty of parking. Well kept. Nice relaxing short walk.
Hiked with Elizabeth and Erick. Nice new area to hike.
Decent workout for heart rate, but a bit too warm on this trail. Very little shade areas on an unusually warm October day
Very clean trail area and people using the area were all polite and aware of mountain bikes sharing the trail. Staying on the Desert Tortoise Loop kept my heart rate up, but was not too taxing. Summer is over time to go back out.
