The land is absolutely beautiful starting out in the forest pines with some snow in patches on the ground. The road is wide and well maintained. Drive a couple miles and the scenery changes into high desert with trees following along the East Verde River. River/creek crossings are present but most are dry in January. Once you arrive at a Y intersection north of the Contact Trick Tank, take the right and continue to follow F.R 209. This is the last quarter of the trail and the trail terrain completely changes. The trail narrows, rocks now appear and the level of difficulty changes from a 1-2 to a 5-7. Boulder ranges are plentiful ranging in sizes of 8"-14" with waterfall ledges 6"-12" in height. This will take you back up the mountain and back to the pines and ends the trail back at Highway 87 around Milepost 261. You could also start here with the technical portion and save the longer scenic portion for the end.

Awesome trail! As stated in other reviews the first 9 miles is very easy and laid back. You can take just about anything down the first part. HOWEVER, if you choose to continue onto FR 209 which is right at the Y intersection make sure you have 4wd, decent clearance, and heavy duty tires. We took our Rubicon w.2.5 inch lift & Kevlar tires and had a blast! 209 is a jeep trail though for sure! If ya have a Chevy captiva, traverse etc don't attempt it.

It’s a road, not a trail.

Beautiful scenic trail with technical rocky areas near the end. Definitely required 4x4 to complete.

Really scenic and fun trail. I drove it in my jeep. The first half is easy and laidback, the second half was rocky with some technical parts. Had to go into 4L at one point. Really fun though and looking forward to going again soon.

Wonderful scenery, the road is easy to travel for the first 3/4 of the trail. Quite a few places to pull off the trail safely and go for a hike, explore lots of rock formations and just sit by a creek. Extremely quiet, we only saw a couple other cars who were enjoying the creek and 1 UTV running the trail. I would love to drive this trail again.
