The trail to the Red Mountain is a fairly standard, flat hike through juniper and then ponderosa pine forests with a big payoff at a unique crater in the Flagstaff area full of otherworldly hoodoos and pigeonholes. Hiking time was 45 minutes in, 30 minutes out. Make sure to bring 1-2 liters of water, apply sunscreen, and wear a wide-brimmed hat, as there is little shade along the trail except for a tree here or there.

Our 3 year old and 6 year old were able to hike to the ladder and back with only a modicum of whining :-). It took us about 2 hours and 15 minutes out and back with the kids including breaks to gather pine cones and lava rock.

Super easy beautiful trail, one of my favorites if I have a couple hours to spare and just want to go for a little walk.

For a short hike just off the road it was awesome. The first mile is nothing exciting but once you get there and climb the ladder it is another world. Fun exploring and climbing the features.

Beautiful trail, the pace of it is nice, you get a full view of the mountain as you walk in and before you know it there’s rocks to the left and right of you. Quiet and low key.

this is a failry easy hike, there is an incline going in but it is gradual. Once you reach the caldera area with the red rocks and hoodoos, it's like being on another planet. Plenty of places to explore amidst the rocks, and several little slot canyon type openings. The trail itself is exposed at first, then a little shade here and there the further up you go. Don't rush it - be prepared to spend some time exploring and taking in the view at the base of the mountain - so many unique formations.

This trail was pretty short and had a beautiful ending, the snow was gorgeous against the red rock and green pondos. My favorite hike around Flagstaff so far.

Awesome hike especially if you enjoy climbing rocks which you can do once you reach the end of the trail. It does get cooler at the base of the Canyon so make sure to dress warm if you plan on hiking it in late November.

Great if you’re in average or less than average physical condition, but all skill levels should check it out! It is like walking into another world at the end - surprising, beautiful, enchanting. Quick and totally worthwhile hike! Wear shoes for exploring on/over some rocks. We went in early November - sunny and low 60’s, but prob 5-10 degrees cooler at the base of the mountain.

Great trail for an easy trek to see some mountains. Not much to explore once you’re at the end but it’s a very pleasant trail. Shady about half the time. Wonderful sounds of winds and curves.

Highlight of our trip! If you love climbing and exploring, this trail is for you! A very easy 3 mi out and back trail that has a huge payoff at the end! Highly recommend climbing up into the rocks and exploring around. So beautiful and you feel like you’re on a different planet.

Easy hike, with a great payoff at the end. Take the time to explore around inside the caldera, and see it from different vantage points. Trail is pretty exposed midday, but there are pines at the end - good place to have a snack and cool off.

This is a short, easy trail that is well maintained and suitable for casual walkers. The trail itself is fairly routine, but prepare to be enchanted as you approach and enter the towering rock doorway into the caldera canyon. It is gorgeous and contains a highly varied backdrop of contrasting rocks, colors and vegetation. It is fairly tale perfect and feels like a secret oasis inside the canyon. All of this gives Red Mt a distinct character that is unlike any other hike in the area, and provides a highly enjoyable and memorable walk.

Walked this trail with my wife as beginners in hiking. The road to the parking "lot" is unpaved and signage for the road is really visable. The trail head is well identified with various signs along the way to verify you are on the right path even though the trail is clearly warn into the earth. There is a little incline walking into the volcano which can slow the pace down but coming out is a breeze. You must climb up a 6' maintained ladder to enter the volcano and do not worry as there are hand rails as well. The views inside are incredible and the views of the San Francisco Peak to the East is really nice on the trail.

Exceeded my expectations! The trail was very easy and well marked. My wife and I were the only ones the trail. There is a lot of exploring around at the end of the trail. Just be on the lookout for loose gravel if you explore the rock faces.

Hidden gem. Simple hike, but a unique experience once inside the heart of the mountain. Don't forget to explore this inner portion, but please be responsible.

This hike was quick and easy. It starts along a flat and wide trail for a while, but gets a lot more interesting once you climb the ladder up and are among the cinders and the heart of the mountain.

Ages 7 to 73 hiked it. Take plenty of water as it was picturesque & we spent plenty of time photographing, playing on the cinder & climbing the boulders. I would recommend wearing hiking shoes to climb the boulders as they have better traction.

Really pretty views of Kendrick and Humphrey's along the trail, as well as some neat rock formations at the end of the trail. Easy hike, bring the kids.

Trail is very pretty and continues to climb elevation gradually till the end. I went in December, so there was still plenty of snow in the amphitheater to play with. The only thing that I marked down on was that the trail wasn't clearly marked in some places. I could have easily taken a wrong turn along the way if it wasn't for a small set of cairns that I spotted.

My 13 year old daughter and I completed this hike and really enjoyed ourselves. She is not much of a "hiker" so I called it a long walk, which was fitting. The start of the hike through the wash is not very exciting, but once you get to the ladder...it's a stunning area and fun to explore. This is an excellent family hike with the kids!

This side trip on the way to the Grand Canyon is a nice and scenic light walk from the trail head to the "amphitheater" and hoodoos carved into the side of the mountain. Sturdy shoes would be recommended to fully explore the site. No water or facilities. You get a little bit of exploring and a reminder of Bryce Canyon. On the way back it opens to a great view of the San Francisco Peaks.
