The unique architecture and location of the Chapel, inspirations from the Empire State Building when observed that a cross could be seen when viewed from a certain angle. Designed by a Frank Lloyd Wright student, Marguerite Brunswig Staude, the chapel was built in 1956 and rises 200 feet from the ground between two large red rock formations. One of the most distinctive features is a 90-foot cross, which can be seen from the ground along State Route 179. A massive stained glass window turns the chapel's interior into a kaleidoscope of color at certain times of the day. No services are held here, but it provides an ideal setting for spiritual reflection and prayer as well as incredible views of the Red Rocks. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.

It’s beautiful all around and inside. Nice steady climb.

A fun hike, and an added bonus is that you can check out the Chapel at the end. It will be crowded at the Chapel, but then you can hop back on the peaceful trail to make your way back to the trailhead.

Perfect for beginner hikers! Chicken point is definitely a highlight! Giving it 4 stars because of limited parking and sometimes we had trouble staying on path. We used this app to help though! Definitely recommend One suggestion, get there early, there is limited parking. Once you’re there, check out the chapel before you hike, it’s worth it! The trailhead is down the road in the second parking lot beyond the brown fence

limited parking space we just parked at curbside of a private mansion. but most people are not staying long so, if you want to wait at the parking lot, good luck.

Easy trail but very scenic and rewarding. Worth checking out if you're already at the Chapel of the Holy Cross. The trailhead is not well marked but just look for the wood fence about halfway up the parking lot

This wasn’t really a “hike” to me. Golf carts will take you up from the lower parking area. The cathedral is beautiful. There is a gift shop and beautiful views. There is a gorgeous property on the right - whoever lives there is a very lucky person! It’s breath taking!

To be clear, there is the cathedral, which is not a hike but very picturesque and crowded, then there is the trail. look for red fence about halfway up in parking lot. The views are incredible and the trail is relatively easy. I did encounter a rattlesnake on the trail, which was a first for me personally.

I really want visitors to know when facing the chapel entry doors to the left are courthouse & bell & elephant. To the right are the beautiful Cathedrals (the back of them) The huge home built has taken from our views of this most photographed place in Sedona & in Northern AZ. We love this treasure & it is worth reading the story behind it.

Visiting the chapel is a nice experience. Totally overrun by people but everyone is in a great mood. You could do the little out and back on the Chapel Trail which is a very easy and safe trail. Why not?! Take a little water and go on a stroll with your friends. The Chapel Trail is a nice side trip if you are hiking up Little Horse on your way to Chicken Point. Might as well check out the Chapel on your way!

Beautiful monument! Didn’t spend to much time, there were lots of visitors. Gift shop is weak, nothing worth buying. Other than that great place to stop.

Out and back trail. The scenery is special and felt like I was right up near the mountains. Very limited wildlife...maybe that's good in a desert! Trail is in very good condition and only slippery in a few spots. That's important to this 54 yr old overweight guy who is looking for a safe experience. At times, I felt I was in someone's back yard. Busy parking lot but we were the only ones on the trail.

Heavily congested not enough parking. Views were beautiful once we were able to circle around and find parking..interesting..just a quick pit stop before hitting butte canyon trail.

Great hike. It is breathtaking! We did the following loop: started at the Mystic trail head, Pig trail, Hog Heaven, High on the Hog, Broken Arrow and finally the Chapel Trail. Took the time to visit the chapel which is a must see.

Like others below, this really isn't a hike. The views are fantastic, though.

Sedona is more than a village of cute shops and adventure outfitters driving pink jeeps. There are also lots of hikers and bike riders. We drove to the Chapel of the Holy Cross on Chapel Road, which is built right into the red rock and is free, but requires a pass given to you at the entrance; we saw Eagle Head Rock (from the front door of the chapel, look three-quarters of the way up the mountain to see the eagle's head), the Twin Nuns (2 pinnacles standing side by side), and Mother and Child Rock (to the left of the Twin Nuns). The church is a pretty Catholic church, complete with a bookstore and great views of the valley. From the outside rotunda overlooking the Sedona Valley, we could also see a huge house being built just across the street with an observatory wing. Nice short stop.

Great hike for families.. views are spectacular. Options abound for more difficult climbing. Chapel is best seen before 10... crowds descend.

From parking lot to cathedral was about .3 miles and not bad

Saturday, October 15, 2016

The accessibility factor is a plus for a guaranteed family friendly hike for all but it's heavily trafficked and the church is so tiny, it's hard not to feel cramped during the whole trip. Of course Sedona is beautiful enough to make any hike worth whir and it's nice to say you've been to the actual church on the mountainside

This was our third choice to do, we were about to start the trail to Cathedral Rock Trail but ended up at the wrong starting point which was a 4.5 mile hike and after doing Devils Bridge Trail earlier this morning we thought it would be best to do it another day so we opt to do Chapel of the Holy Cross Trail 1.4 mile. The area and Church are incredible with some very beautiful views, nice & easy.
