The unique architecture and location of the Chapel, inspirations from the Empire State Building when observed that a cross could be seen when viewed from a certain angle. Designed by a Frank Lloyd Wright student, Marguerite Brunswig Staude, the chapel was built in 1956 and rises 200 feet from the ground between two large red rock formations. One of the most distinctive features is a 90-foot cross, which can be seen from the ground along State Route 179. A massive stained glass window turns the chapel's interior into a kaleidoscope of color at certain times of the day. No services are held here, but it provides an ideal setting for spiritual reflection and prayer as well as incredible views of the Red Rocks. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.

Like others below, this really isn't a hike. The views are fantastic, though.

Sedona is more than a village of cute shops and adventure outfitters driving pink jeeps. There are also lots of hikers and bike riders. We drove to the Chapel of the Holy Cross on Chapel Road, which is built right into the red rock and is free, but requires a pass given to you at the entrance; we saw Eagle Head Rock (from the front door of the chapel, look three-quarters of the way up the mountain to see the eagle's head), the Twin Nuns (2 pinnacles standing side by side), and Mother and Child Rock (to the left of the Twin Nuns). The church is a pretty Catholic church, complete with a bookstore and great views of the valley. From the outside rotunda overlooking the Sedona Valley, we could also see a huge house being built just across the street with an observatory wing. Nice short stop.

Great hike for families.. views are spectacular. Options abound for more difficult climbing. Chapel is best seen before 10... crowds descend.

The accessibility factor is a plus for a guaranteed family friendly hike for all but it's heavily trafficked and the church is so tiny, it's hard not to feel cramped during the whole trip. Of course Sedona is beautiful enough to make any hike worth whir and it's nice to say you've been to the actual church on the mountainside

This was our third choice to do, we were about to start the trail to Cathedral Rock Trail but ended up at the wrong starting point which was a 4.5 mile hike and after doing Devils Bridge Trail earlier this morning we thought it would be best to do it another day so we opt to do Chapel of the Holy Cross Trail 1.4 mile. The area and Church are incredible with some very beautiful views, nice & easy.

Not reAlly a hike but parking is limited so you can work a bit to get up to the church. Beautiful views.
