Cathedral Rock is a short hike that offers beautiful views of the naturally occurring red rock formations in the heart of red rock country. This is a favorite hike in the Sedona area. The Cathedral Rock trailhead can be accessed off of Back'O'Beyond Road. There is a small trailhead parking area. However, the trail can also be accessed from Baldwin and Templeton trails. The trail ends with a short steep climb to Cathedral Rock. There are some steep sections so hiking shoes are recommended. There are great views along the entirety of the trail.

I wouldn’t recommend it for people not in good shape and comfortable climbing. And please leave you 1 year old and your dog at home. Not appropriate for canines and babies.

Breathtaking. Fun for the entire family.

A bit steep for us- but even 3/4 if the way up is quite a view. I’d choose Templeton over this just because the scramble is too treacherous for me!

My favorite hike in Sedona!! Well marked trail. Breathtaking views when you arrive at the top. Can be challenging for some in a few spots.

Awesome

The only reason I would rate this as moderate would be because it’s long and the hike up to cathedral. The loop is all flat with lots of mountain bikers but super pretty. Bring water not too much shade!

Unbelievable at sunset- we were up there with only three others and were treat to an incredible experience. Windy at the top!

Great short hike with moderate to difficult vertical climb mid way up to the summit. Spectacular views. One of my favorite hikes.

Amazing and popular hike. Short distance but steep and narrow at times and very crowded so can take a good coupe hours but place is full of good energy and people were gracious and polite even when having to wait for people on narrow ledges and 2 way traffic. We did the hike with a 7&10 year old and it tested their abilities but they were able to manage and felt great about completing it. Would recommend getting there early to get parking in the small lot there and to get going before trail get overcrowded. Views at different plateaus along the way are amazing and at the top is just beautiful.

Phenomenal height to view the sunset with a delightful setting to have an evening picnic. A wonderful moon glare upon the rocks to illuminate the pathway to descend at night fall. Moderate quick hike with a little agility required towards the top with foot holes:!)

Please don't bring flipflops, this is a scramble. Expect to use hands and feet for 3 steep sections. About 100 feet of class 3 terrain, otherwise a short hike for grand views of the area. Once at the top continue around left for views of the spire.

What a beautiful hike! This was our first hike in Sedona and the views are amazing. We did the loop with a lovely pit stop by the creek. The water was cold but my boys (8 & 11) loved it. Great photos of Cathedral Rock from the creek. The hike was easy for the adults but a bit more challenging for the kids. Good short hike for kids who don’t enjoy hiking.

Hiked this trail today via Templeton Trail.
Beautiful hike with reward seeing Cathedral Rock up close and personal ! A little crowded today but I have hiked this 2 other times not during spring break!!
Trail parallels Oak Creek which is a bonus with great photo spots !!!

Great trail for active families! My husband and I brought our twin 12-year-old boys and eight-year-old daughter. They loved it! One steep narrow section that is exciting to get through. Don’t be too scared watching people walk out on the ledge for pictures at the top – it’s wider than it looks from afar! Given we were there at spring break, it was heavily trafficked and was backed up at the narrow part. Friendly hikers though who all took turns graciously.

This is the most photographed Rock in Sedona. There’s phenomenal 360 views and we met cool people on our hike. Easy day hike with good picnic spots on the flat rocks. Be sure to have good shoes with traction. It’s easy for kids, too. Definitely doing this again.

Vies are beautiful and area is very nice. 10 $ self park at the bottom of the trail. Take back o beyond road not cathedral rock trail. do an ealy or late hike as the climbing can get busy and you will spend alot of time waiting to go up and down. if it is too busy take the templeton trail and enjoy the views on the backside of the rock.

Great hike, but have shoes with good tread and be prepared to scramble and climb. Difficult side of moderate. With fear of heights, you can go about halfway and enjoy. The big payoff is the amazing view at the top. Watch for trail markers on the way down or it gets sketchy.

Challenging but worth it

Just wow!! We wanted a hike that would be more than a well-worn trail and walking up switchbacks, and boy does this deliver AND THEN SOME! Previous reviews helped us be aware beforehand: this is a good moderate challenge up to a point....where it’s very easy to stop, enjoy the views, and u-turn back down. But then it becomes much more physically demanding, exciting (and a good test of any fear of heights) as you start the climbing and scrambling to the trail’s end. My three children (9, 11, 13) were like Spider-Man-billy goat hybrids both climbing and descending these steep rocks and tiny footholds!

The hike itself is only part of the payoff- there are views in all directions and even though there is a marker showing the end of the trail, more paths are blazed to continue further (to the left as you face the marker) around the rocks and along their edges— I left that for the extra-daring!

Last note that helped us: we got there early (close to 9am-but even earlier would’ve been better)...it’s hugely popular and even by the time we finally decided to come back down after exploring around the top of the trail, there were lines of hikers waiting turns in some of the sections where there is only one way up/down.

So: get up early, bring snacks, your best grippy hiking shoes, and good camera, and channel your inner billy goat- you’ll love it too!

A little scary in a few spots but short and well worth it. Wear shoes with tread or hiking boots.

Fantastic. I am in decently good shape and it was moderate to hard. It’s all uphill and a lot of rock scrambling. But views along the way and at the end are stunning. Took us 25 mins from the cathedral Rock trailhead to get to the top. Then it’ll be another 25 to get down. Everyone said to get here early because the trail is crowded and the two parking lots get full. So we got here at 8am in high season on a Thursday. The first lot was full but second lot was mostly empty. This was the perfect time to go because the trail wasn’t crowded at all and we had space to get up and enjoy the view and the weather was perfect (58 degrees). Definitely worth it!
