Cathedral Rock to Red Rock Crossing is a 4.3 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Sedona, Arizona that features a river and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and bird watching and is best used from March until November. Dogs are also able to use this trail.
There are restrooms and a place to fill water at the trailhead.
Arrive early to secure a parking spot. Even the overflow parking further down Back O' Beyond Road tends to fill up quickly, even during the off-season. A Red Rock Recreation Pass is a good idea to pay for parking fees in advance, and can be purchased several places in Sedona, including the Chamber of Commerce, which is on the way to the trail head if you're coming down the I-89 from the North.
Two trails. One around to red crossing is easier and the one up to cathedral rock is difficult but worth it! Get there before 6 am to find a parking spot!
SO worth it. A little challenging for young kids. I am a moderately experienced hiker and hiked it in about 45 minutes total. Very fun and exciting hike!
Be ready to do a little crawling. Overall beautiful views. Well worth the climb.
The Cathedral rock part was packed, practically a queue of people going up (on a February weekday)...so I skipped and headed to the right, to take Templeton to Baldwin’s crossing. Great hike, along the river. After reaching end, I came back and did full Baldwin loop, which I recommend. Moderate climbs, great views. Tip: parking at Cathedral trail head was busy. You can park at Baldwin (looked pretty empty) and hike back along Templeton to Cathedral from there...basically opposite from this hike’s start.
Spectacular views of red rock landscape in Sedona. Well worth the travel time. This is going to be a repeat hike in the near future.
Beautiful but very difficult - we started at 6:15am, I recommend going early as it gets busy
Note there is an $11 fee to enter the parking area. The park doesn’t open until 9:00 am so if you’re planning an early start get some coffee and take your time getting there. First part of the trail along the creek is well covered with trees and there’s a nice quarry area along the creek which I imagine is an amazing area for swimming and sun bathing during the warmer months. The creek is clear and just serene. There were lots of families with younger children. There are picnic benches along the creek. We didn’t go up the trail because it wasn’t very obvious how to get up to cathedral rock from this hike. We ended up leaving and driving over to the actual cathedral rock hike trail.
