Getting There

This is a fun, moderate hike that has a well-defined trail. Along the trail are many different desert plants, la cholla, prickly pear, sahauro, and desert shrubs. The first half of the hike, you will have a constant view of rugged mountain ridges. The second half of the hike will drop you down and right along a wash/creek bed that you will cross four times. During the monsoon season (May- August) the wash will be full of water, so be careful when crossing. Also remember that this is the desert and with it comes desert critters (snakes, scorpions, etc.) Keep your eyes open and you will be fine, and remember to drink lots of water!! During the summer months the best time to hike, would be in the morning hours.

AZ STATE PARK Ranger Service 520-628-5798

If you were headed North on Oracle rd (HWY 77) a couple miles past 1st ave. but before you get to Tangerine Rd. make a right into Catalina State Park. You should see a sign for the park. Head east until you come to the Ranger Station, there is a $6.00 daily fee. Continue east until you see the parking lot, and a few feet south of the parking lot is the trailhead.

Running

Was expecting to come to Catalina park to hike a longer and harder trail but because of the fires you can only stay in park boundaries, not into the forest. Found this “canyon loop” trail to run on and it was great. Lots of evidence of fire, kinda cool. Will definitely do again

Really nice trail especially in the spring with the creek running. A little boring in the beginning, but gets more interesting further in.

Very well maintained trail, some water near the end. We took our dog for his first hike and he did great the whole way. Some bugs but hard to avoid this time of year. A good family option in the park.

Hiked this beautiful trail April 3rd. First off, I would rate it as easy/moderate and not moderate. Secondly, this trail from parking lot and back is 2.8 miles, not 2.3 as the app says.

Great trail. We did the trail clockwise and hiked up the rivers to start. We did the trail barefoot. Very busy but fun trail.

Great trial for dog walking. Somewhat crowded, but we arrived after 10am. Saw some horses and mountain bikers, too, but enough room to let all pass with little hassle. Plenty of water flowing through the canyon. Easy amd well maintained loop.

You don't have to do the whole loop to enjoy it. Go until you're half out of water and then go back. In the winter you can sometimes see the surprising contrast of cactus in the canyon and snow on the mountains.

If going counter clockwise wise don’t let the 1st climb out of the wash discourage you; it’s the hardest part. Other than that it is an easy hike on a fairly smooth path. Mountain views and creek side hike (there was run off from mountain snow.
