Fun route accesses several difficult 4x4 trails This is a central-corridor route through a popular 4-wheel-drive area. Branching off of this route is Woodpecker/Ajax loop, Martinez Canyon and the Coke Ovens. (All available as eGuides from FunTreks on EveryTrail.) The main feature of this route is narrow Box Canyon at the southern end of what's described here. Although rare, this section is susceptible to dangerous flash floods. Stay out of the canyon if heavy rains are predicted or if you see dark clouds nearby. The walls are too steep to climb should you get caught in the canyon. This trail can also be driven in the opposite direction starting on Price Road just north of Florence. Open all year except a few weeks a year when military training exercises are in progress. Dates of closure are posted at the main entrance at Cottonwood Canyon Road and Mineral Mountain Road. The area is closed if red flags are flying. A State Trust Land permit is required to ride in this area. Call 602-364-2753 for details. It's tempting to rate this trail easy but there are several moderate-size rocks to get over. Stock 4x4 SUVs with good ground clearance should be okay. You may bottom out occasionally but damage is unlikely. A giant ledge must be negotiated if you take the lower road. SUVs with low ground clearance should take the high-road bypass. In the event Cottonwood Canyon Road is closed at the west junction of N Reymert Rd, you can use Mineral Mountain Road from US60.

This is an amazing mix of difficulty levels. From easy to moderate and a few spots that could cross over to the difficult. Take plenty of water and take your time. There are trails that wind and twist through these foothills and down through the canyon. Make sure to have at least one other with you since it would be very easy to make a wrong turn or break down and this is off the beaten path enough that you could be out there a while. Get ready to see some of the most beautiful desert foothill terrain you will ever see and enjoy the gorgeous views. Ps. Make sure to check and see if the national guard range is in use. Usually they will fly a red flag which means there is a good chance the trails will be closed. It’s more for your safety than anything.

Others have no respect for nature. They leave trash on the trail. Lots of side by side and razor riders. Exit to Hwy is gated and locked so ya have to turn around to leave. Beautiful scenery! Great way to spend the day!!

First time to this trail and had a great time. Was riding a Can Am X3. Started at Price road where shortly after turning onto it there is a staging area. Then there is a long 10ish mile ride down gravel road till you hit another staging area then then start into the creek wash that at this point is dry. It winds back and fourth into the canyon where the water starts to show up. The water is a trickle and gives you something to splash around in but is never an obstacle. The canyon was gorgeous and the ride was slow and had a few challenging spots but nothing impassible. After exiting the canyon the real fun began as a giant playground opened up. Winding trails, up large hills, down more creek beds, and random trails to follow a that go on for miles. You can easily spend a day here hitting all the side trails. Traffic can be an issue as it is one way in/out. I was there on a Wednesday and there was moderate traffic. I can only imagine what a weekend is like. I really enjoyed the trails and will be back.

March 24 2019. Great 52.6 mile quad ride. Parked at first staging area on Cottonwood Canyon Rd. Only Callenging areas were between the end of this Rd to Box canyon. The rest way was easy. We went through canyon to Price Rd then to Florence to River Bottom Grill had a great lunch then took other trails back to staging area. There was a stream of water going through Canyon from recent rains which just added an extra wet touch to ride. Tons of side trails to explore so many return trips will happen. great day.

This was our first trip in our new JL Wrangler and first time to the area. The JL is stock everything, but seen fine crawling over most of the rocks. The wife was a great spotter. I’d give this trail a 4.5 and will be making more trips out here again.

I wish I knew about this are sooner. I’m from Phoenix and I’ve been looking for a nearby place with great off-roading. I entered Box Canyon from the southern entrance off Price road after fueling up in Florence. There is a new sign on Price Rd that briefly redirects you off the path marked in the AllTrails map but it reconnects shortly after and then you eventually progress from gravel to dirt roads. Box Canyon itself is scenic and not difficult for a stock Wrangler to weave through, but I really had my fun today when entering the hills on the north end of Box Canyon. There are innumerable paths for you to explore with classic beautiful Arizona views. Deviate from the AllTrails route and find the steepest vertical climb you can find out there! It’s a blast! I exited directly onto the 60 after a few hours of fun. I was there on a Friday late morning and it wasn’t very busy at all, it’s probably a very different story on the weekend though.

Great trail! You have to bypass the gate near the entrance to box canyon since the gate is closed... so make sure you download google maps before you lose service and find another way to get in. It’s pretty easy to figure out when you get there. I made it through the rock steps and every other obstacle in a bone stock 4-door Rubicon; so you can use that as a measuring stick! Have fun!

Very scenic ...very rocky..the upper an lower loop with the ledge...take upper..ledge is crazy..made it in a RZR..I wind not try the ledge with stock anything..my stock 2016 900 RZR amazed me how it performed..much of this trail was so rocky 5 mph was about tops..took 11/2 hr to go about 7 miles..very fun an beautiful but extremely tiring to wrist an arm holding steering wheel straight on the rocks an being thrown side by side..but absolutely wonderful..great app..easy to get lost with all the intersection trails but with app saved us more than once.phone might say no service in spots but gps on app keeps working..also you must bypass first part of trail around cattle farm..gate is locked an says private..no trespass..easy reroute

Went to see and drive through box canyon. Never saw it. Apparently it is best to go in off of price... we went in off of 79. it is some rough, narrow, at times tedious driving. just started going down random branches off the main "road". steep inclines and decents. reached a couple plateaus with some endless views. extremely tight turns near large drop offs kept us on our toes. some was smooth, some extremely rocky. nothing that we expected or planned for but still an extremely fun afternoon.

Nice ride but it was extremely busy through the canyon. There are a lot of blind corners so you have to go slow on motorized vehicles.

Absolute blast to drive. Picked up some newbies to add to the caravan. Some obstacles can be tricky if you pick the wrong line especially in a stock vehicle. Scenery is beautiful. Just fun, easy but fun.
