Description
Waypoints (3)

This is a beautiful short trail up to a cave with fantastic views at the end! If you want to see the panorama from the back you must be brave and a good climber to get into the small, slippery cave. Don’t underestimate the length: it's rated moderate but the last part of the hike is definitely hard. Once you make it to the cave, your effort will be rewarded with an amazing view. Make sure you bring plenty of water as there are very little shaded areas. You will not have cell phone service once you leave the trailhead. Start on the Long Canyon Trail and after a little bit, you'll pass by a golf course on the right side. Once you've been walking for 0.6 from the trailhead, you'll reach a fork in the road. The left side will be blocked by a log. Take that path and you'll see a barbed wire on the right side. This means you're on the right path to the Birthing Cave.

2/9/2021: Easy hike until the very end, but not too bad. If you can, wedge your way into birthing cave, turn around, and take a fisheye photo! Also, there are many side trails - not sure if sanctioned - that lead to the Cave from slightly different vantage points, and it looked possible to scramble to ledge of rock formation to the right.

Great short hike! Quite a climb at the end but the rest of the hike was easy peasy! I was too scared to attempt the reach to the "belly button" to get that iconic pic of this place but still got some great pics.

Absolutely worth it! First part of trail is flat and easy, but make sure to use AllTrails map so you don’t miss the turnoff (it’s not clearly marked and it’s easy to continue along a different route instead). Ascent is pretty straightforward, but descent can be slippery, so be careful.

HikingGreat!

Our group mistakenly stayed on the Long Canyon Trail for much longer than anticipated, however that was a great addition to this hike. The cave itself was beautiful, but it was crowded. We got to the actual cave around 10:45, and there were a lot of people. It’s an incredible view though, and it’s so neat to sit in! Easily accessible too.

Nice and easy. Overpopulated, like much of Sedona. Noisy. Planes. Helicopters, drones. It’s a Saturday so not a surprise. Good for stretching your legs without too much work!

This is not an official trail. When you take the left at the “fork in the road” where the fence is, you are actually going onto a social trail that the trail crews have clearly made an effort to block off, hence the “area blocked by logs”. Please respect the ecosystems and remain on the trail. I was super excited to go on this hike and so heartbroken to see it was actually just a social trail that people have created. The reason trails exist is as a “corridor of sacrifice” so that people can experience the beauty of the nature around without damaging too much of it. By wandering around as we please that doesn’t allow the ecosystem to be preserved. So please respect all the hard work both nature and the community has put into preserving this area and remain only on designated trail! If you see areas that look like they are blocked off, that is because they are intentionally blocked to deter people from the continued use of that social trail. TLDR: not a real designated trail, and many other actual trails that offer the same if not better views. Please do not go off the trail when reaching the wood fencing structure. If you are here to value nature, you will understand that it does not exist only for our enjoyment to do with as we please. Please stay on the designated trail, following Leave No Trace principles. If I could remove this trail from the app I would.

Definitely be sure to preload the map, plenty of opportunities to take the wrong turn. Minimal off street parking near the trailhead, be prepared to hunt for a spot. With that said, well worth the views. Shallower than I expected from pictures. If you plan to get a photo on the ledge, try to make it early in the day. By 2pm, the segment of the ledge that was still exposed to sunlight has severely decreased from when we first arrived at 1pm. Overall, short, easy, non strenuous hike with great view payoff.

Pretty easy to get their last bit is a scramble so have good shoes. The birthing cave itself is nice but don’t go up if you have vertigo! Went around 3:00 on a Wednesday and not many people.

Hiking

Did this hike in mid-February in the evening. Started the hike after parking on the side of the road. It was a very quick hike up to the base of the cave. Final ascent is short and slightly steep but overall easy. Beautiful views. You get the meaning of “Birthing Cave” when you sit in the cave looking outward. Only potential drawback are the loads of people taking selfies and flying drones. Worth it for the view.

Determination. Strength. Agility. Passion. These are few of many skills required to get oneself from the parking lot to the cave. The trail is a trial. You pass the trial, you are rewarded with beauty.

Fun hike. Really very easy until you get to the base of birthing cave. The climb up is the most difficult.

Honestly, this cave is for me a one-time to go and that's all. I took amazing pictures and enjoy my hike with my bf and friends. However, it is crowded. People bring their dogs and passed all over you without respect or consideration. A woman with 3 dogs was just there. The dogs were loud and anxious. It was a real nightmare. If you are looking for a peaceful place, probably go during the week. I was thee at 7 am and it was pretty busy. We finally found a bit of peace ( 10 minutes) then it got crowded and loud. I am a Sedona explorer and I believe that there are many better places than this one.
