HikingBugsGreat!Over grown

This was nice hike with some really great views in the mountains outside of Payson. We visited in early September after a very dry summer and found that there was no water falling from the “falls”, but that there were a few leftover puddles. Especially towards the end of the trail the vegetation was a little grown over the trail, and you had plants hitting your legs for certain portions, so just be mindful of that if you’d prefer to have pants on. We did the hike in the afternoon, and got to enjoy some decent shade for a good bit of the hike once the sun was further behind the mountains. When you are getting on the trail, make sure that you turn right for trail 43 as there is no signage explaining this. To the left is trail 44 which is much longer, and does not lead to the falls. According to our tracking, the trail is actually longer than the app says. Our phones tracked 3.5 miles each way, for 7 miles total. Driving up to the trail is a very rough road where you might want 4 x 4. Also, expect to see steer along this road that may be in the roadway, so drive cautiously. On the trail itself there were definitely some insects, a bit more than hiking in Sedona. We also came across a wild tarantula right beside the trial. Overall I would definitely recommend this hike to more experienced hikers as the trail can be a little difficult to see, and there is limited cell reception in the middle of the trail.

Hiked this first weekend in June, no waterfall. Although that was a little disappointing, it is late in the season. A little rocky for the first mile, then dirt. Patches of shade was nice. All uphill for 3 miles so be prepared for that. Some bugs, not too bad. Nice views.

Interesting trail. If your app didn't work correctly when you're up there, like mine, follow the sign for "Barnhardt TR NO 43". I'll post a photo. The trail itself was very rocky in spots and narrow pretty much the whole time. I would highly recommend going in the AM the "shade" is miniscule. Getting there will require a vehicle with good suspension as the road is also quite rocky and washboard but I saw Jettas and a Mazda up there so 4x4 may not be required but I'd recommend.
