Getting There

This trail, as many in the Sedona area, is connected to several other trails. One popular addition is to add the first short part of the Templeton Trail until Oak Creek turns north, then return to Baldwin.

From the center of the Village of Oak Creek at Highway 179, turn west on Verde Valley School Road for just over 4 miles, through town and past the school on to a parking area. Do not turn off this road, but continue forward. The trailhead is across road at the north end of the lot.

Hiking

Very nice, plenty of ups & downs. Shaded first half (left side at TH) Wildflowers include Indian Paintbrush, yellow and tiny purple byroads. Lovely. Ocotillos at last third, beginning to bloom.

This was a very enjoyable hike. We did the loop counter clockwise. Power lines are in the first 1/3 mile of the hike. We easily found parking at 8 am on a Saturday. The lot was full when we finished.

HikingGreat!

Easy family hike. Ignore our time as we had a cantankerous tween in tow. Diverted down to the river and along Templeton for a little while. Very pretty and lovely views of Cathedral Rock. Arrived at the parking lot before 8 and there were only 2 cars. By the time we came back to our car, the parking lot was full. Only met a handful of people on the trail. You need to have/ buy a red rock pass for the parking lot

Did the Baldwin loop and did the big one by mistake. We already had done a 2 mile hike and was just trying to see the river. Very tired but, it was not hard at all and it did have very nice scenery.

I read somewhere that this hike was only 1 mile but it was still relatively easy and had beautiful scenery for it being about 2 miles. If you want good photos of cathedral and castle rock this hike has some good angles of it.

Awesome trail with beautiful views of cathedral rock and oak creek. Had to keep an eye out for mountain bikers flying through but they were very respectful. When we got to the parking area around 9am there were empty spots. By 1130 it was getting pretty busy but there was still roadside parking available.

Easy loop, great views without any major effort. There's some rocky spots that might be challenging for those with weak knees but overall pretty easy. Parking lot was mostly full but there was room for roadside parking. The trail was very well marked down easy to follow.

This trail was a perfect way to spend the morning, but one part is tricky to navigate. I enjoyed it much more going clockwise from the trail head.

The trail was well-marked with great signage. My 5 and 6 year olds had no trouble with it. I even was able to introduce the younger one to trail running for a portion of it. This is a great trail for families with kids who “don’t like to hike” because the spectacular views make them forget that they are hiking.

Where the trail joins the Templeton trail there’s a bit of a flat sandy area you go through. Would be a nice nighttime photo on a full moon when the trees are in fall colors. Also another good view of Cathedral Rock bearing about 110 degrees if the moon ever gets that far to the south.

Less than a mile out at 34.818163N, 111.800847W found a great spot with a widening in the trail, some flat slick rock, and great music views of the west side of Cathedral Rock framed by a couple of trees. Only thing that would have been better would be if moonrise was a little earlier. We did this in February 26, 2021. Day before might have been better. By the time the moon was “up” it was almost full dark. From this spot, bearing of moon at moon rise was 72 degrees.
