The Aspen Draw trail is one of the nicest in all of the 'Catalinas, and I've been on just about all of them. It's not very isolated with a road on either end, but it doesn't take long to come across the old growth forest. Some of the largest Aspen trees in the range were providing a gold and yellow tinged shade over the switch backs the other day. Very enjoyable.

Pretty trail! If you want to ride a gondola back down the mountain make sure you buy a ticket down the mountain first! You can’t buy a ticket up the mountain

So this is a great trail. The fall colors did not disappoint! Hiked mid October. However I could not find it for the life of me day 1 and finally found it so late I had to wait to go back day 2. To save you all that pain I am going to explain the three different ways you can get to the trail. 1. Hike uphill from SummerHaven: drive into summer haven from Catalina hwy by curving slightly onto Sabino Canyon Hwy. At the first cross street that’s not a private drive , which is Turkey Run Road, turn right and follow it until it dead ends into trail head. Some signage but it’s not super clear. You will see a gnome garden that also marks the start of the trail. Note this is also a residential area at the start so it might seem strange but it’s a trail head too. 2. Hike uphill from Mount Lemmon Ski Area: Directly across the street from the Iron Door restaurant there is a guard rail by the road and yellow metal pole. Take the path behind the guard rail. Yup that’s it . No sign. You hike along the road for a second and then it starts going back towards the ski slopes and then you ascend to the side of the slopes . 3. Hike Down hill from Near Mt Lemmon Summit: when Driving up Ski Run Rd. (turn right from Catalina Hwy right before Summerhaven) you will go past Iron Door restaurant drive up a few switch backs and then park at the first “lot” you see which had a bunch of huge old ski lift equipment laying on the ground. Looking straight out toward the Tucson view you will turn left and hike toward the actual operating ski lift. You will see a bunch of radio towers . Hike towards them. Here it gets tricky and there are three paths down To the right of the ski lift exit... Take first one the one with the sign that says “Aspen Draw”. It’s a very small sign. I understand this sounds obvious but my husband got separated right before hand and both missed the main trail and we both went to far to the right and took two different wrong “trails”... before we figured out what we did (this was day 1 where we couldn’t finish bc it took so long to figure it out). So once you find the trail if you go down it you can pay to ride back up the ski lift (which is what we did just bc we wanted the aerial view) to make it easier, or hike back up or go to summer haven... Up or down if you want a fall color hike on Mt Lemmon this is the one to take , it’s beautiful!

Nice, cool breeze with Fall in the air. Worthwhile moderate little hike if you don’t have a lot of time but want to enjoy some shade and aspens.

Absolutely beautiful! We started the aspen draw trail from summerhaven and ended just passed the radio tower towards the restrooms and hiked back for a total of 6 miles. Almost all of the trail was shaded from the tall pine and cypress trees, perfect escape from 105°+ tucson weather. On the way in is mostly up hill but then you're gifted with the sweet decent on the way back. All in all a moderate hike. Hikers be aware of mountain bikers, this is a shared trail. This has become one of my favorite hikes on Mt Lemmon thus far.

This is probably one of my most favorite trails. Yes going down from the ski lift is easy, but i hike a lot and this trail is “not” easy going up. It fluctuates between moderate to difficult in a few areas, and air gets thin. Its an awesome trail and a must do during the summer and fall because of the shade, but in the winter it becomes known as “Ice Canyon” and very slippery. Most people start at the top which is easy and enjoyable. Secondly you can start from the ski parking lot along the guard rail of the road and go down to where trail head actually starts to go up.

Took the ski lift up to the top of Mt Lemmon and took this trail back down. Very serene in the old-growth forest. It can be difficult to locate the beginning of the trail from the top as it’s not well marked, but the guy manning the lift helped us out. There are some steep spots, and I recommend bringing trekking poles if you are a short-legged person with weak knees such as myself. Trail wasn’t crowded, even though it was the day after Thanksgiving, and a number of hikers had well-behaved dogs in tow. The fall color of the maples and aspens was lovely. A very pleasant hike!

This is a hike that can be done either way. You can hike up and down. Or you can ride the chair lift up and just hike down. That's the way we usually do this, but have also hiked up this trail. It's a very easy hike and walks through some very old Douglas Fir forest. During the summer months, you can buy a lift ticket for the ride up, and then take a leisurely walk down. Once at the top of the lift, you bear to the left to find the trail down. People also mountain bike this trail too, so you have to keep your ears open for riders coming your way. Good way to spend a nice cool summer day in this area. Your lift ticket is good all day too, so when you get back, you can ride up and down the lift again just for the view!!
