Getting There

The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail (AKA the Coastal Trail) is one of Anchorage, Alaska's gems. Start your trip downtown and travel to Kincaid Park, or vice versa. This is an easy-going, beautiful stroll. The trail is designated as multi-use, meaning it is open to cross-country skiers, bikers, and pedestrians. Dogs must legally be kept on-leash. However, expect to run into off-leash dogs as this law is frequently not observed. Accessibility: This trail has a smooth, paved surface and is typically at least five feet wide. The average grade is 2% and the max grade is 9% at the end of the trail (approximately the last 0.2 miles). In the winter, the surface may be slippery due to snow and ice and special wheelchair or stroller tires may be required.

Alaska Division of Tourism, P.O. Box 110801 , Juneau, AK, 99811-0801, Phone: 907-465-2010

Kincaid Park access: navigate to the Kincaid Outdoor Center (AKA the Chalet), and park your vehicle in the lot. There is a trail map just west of the roundabout; the Coastal Trail begins just west of that map and snakes down to the coast. Downtown access: navigate to 2nd and H street. Park your vehicle (don't forget to pay) and head to the coast to find the trail. Other access: there are many ways to intercept the Coastal Trail: Elderberry Park, Westchester Lagoon, Lynn Ary Park, Earthquake Park, and Point Woronzof Park are a few access points.

The views along the trail are amazing! This is a completely flat path and very family friendly! Be mindful of staying on your side of the path as it is well traveled and bikers come up quickly on your left! Bring your camera and go on a non-windy evening at sunset! Stay off the mudflats was much as you’d like to venture out, they can suck you in and require emergency professionals to get you out!

Rented e-bikes next to Snow city cafe, which by the way serves amazing breakfast. Had a blast! Moose along the trail and beautiful scenery. Highly recommend this trail and the e-bikes are game changers!

Perfect weather to go running. The view of the inlet and surrounding mountains was clear and beautiful. I saw two mama moose with their calfs within a 1/4 mile of each other. I took side trails to avoid passing them.

Well maintained busy trail. Our 11 year old did all 20 miles. Mostly flat with a couple good hills. We saw a bull moose and a cow.

Biked from 5th and G to complete the Planet Walk. Had an amazing time. Saw a bull moose laying to the side of the trail that was calm and posed no threat. Other trail users reported there was a blackbear to the side of the trail, but I never saw it. Beautiful day for a bike. Lots of people biking, waking, running, etc., so if you're concerned about COVID definitely bring a mask

Having walked the whole trail, there were things I loved and a few things that bugged me. The views are absolutely amazing, most all of the trail stays shaded, and you get the breeze coming off the water. You definitely have a high chance of seeing Moose! There were plenty of people on the trail but not too over crowded. The people on bikes though... almost all of them wiz by without calling out to the walkers, making us have to dodge quick. A handful called out to let us know to scoot over which is very appreciated! I have some hearing loss and even with my hearing aids I couldn't hear the bikes over the wind until they were right on us. The planes are very loud and low, they will make you pause conversation and want to cover your ears, but that is a small patch of the trail so not too much of a big deal. The sights are definitely worth the walk and you see just about every age group visiting, it's great for everyone.

I would recommend this to bicyclists, joggers/runners, and people looking for an easy walk in a highly populated trail area. Personally, there was much too much bicycle traffic for my comfort, as well as constant noise from the airport. However, if you enjoy watching the planes take off and are looking for a good location to take photos of the Knik arm/Anchorage city skyline, then you will really enjoy this area.

Really nice trail - walked from the start in Elderberry Park to the Earthquake Park, about 6.7 miles roundtrip. Very well maintained, heavily trafficked with walkers, runners, cyclists. Nice informative signage along the way and great views off the coast - unfortunately we could not see Denali due to clouds. The trail in the forest by the Earthquake Park was fascinating - you could really see the impact of the quake on the land, even 45 years after the fact.
