Tips

This route starts at a gate at the bottom of Ken Logan Circle. In summer it can be muddy and in the winter icy. To get to the base of the falls from the overlook, back track to the bridge over South Fork Eagle River, cross it and hang an immediate left up the river to the base of the falls.

This hidden gem in Eagle River boasts an amazingly beautiful frozen waterfall (in winter). If you plan to visit in the winter, I highly recommend bringing ice cleats for better traction. Directions below for a BETTER view at the foot of the falls (instead of the overlook) 1) Head north of Anchorage along AK-1 and get off at the Eagle River Loop exit. Merge right onto Eagle River Loop Rd. 2) Drive 0.2 miles to Hiland Rd. and turn right. 3) Continue on Hiland Rd. for a little more than 3 miles and turn left onto River View Dr. (River View Dr. will turn into Waterfall Dr.) 4) Continue onward until you run into River Park Dr. Turn right on River Park Dr. 5) A little ways down there will be a fork. Take the left fork, Ken Logan Circle. 6) The parking lot has many NO PARKING signs but you should be able to find an open spot in between the signs. 7) At the end of Ken Logan Circle, there will be a closed gate. Go past the gate along the trail (it's ok to pass). 8) Follow the trail for a short distance until you come up to a walking bridge that crosses the river. 9) IMPORTANT: Instead of crossing the bridge, look for a beaten path on the right side just before the bridge. 10) Follow this trail upstream. In a matter of minutes you'll be at the base of the waterfall. ENJOY!

Excellent late winter snowpack made for an easy and exceptionally beautiful hike. Bring cleats and poles as it can be icy. Both the upper and lower trails are groomed for hikers.

Awesome easy trail, beautiful frozen falls, dog and kid friendly, dog owners don’t pick up after their dogs which don’t make it a good scene but everything else was beautiful

Parking is a bit tricky because the trail is in the back of a neighborhood. This trail is very dog friendly. Sadly the pet owners seem not to be trail friendly. They don’t pick up or have their dog go off trail. The trail itself, aside from the above mentioned, is 5 stars. Everything was frozen and snowed over. It was a little icy but easy enough. The falls were beautifully frozen over, with the water flowing through the ice.

This is such a super quick and easy hike but the views are so great. Especially in the winter when the falls are frozen. Such a cool thing to see!

I loved how easy and quick this was with spectacular views. We did the hike from above and for to the overlook of the falls. When we got back to the bridge we took the path back to get up close and personal with the falls. That path was well maintained and in some spots had rope to hold onto. It was beautiful!

The hike to the plat form was quick and easy and so so beautiful. I decided I wanted to get down there closer to the falls. Super muddy and sketch climb. I got very dirty. It was easier going up than down. Look for the best way before just going for it.

Easy trail. When you go to the right of the bridge, there’s a less navigated trail leading to the base of the waterfall. It is a little steep and muddy in some areas, but we were able to easily make it with a toddler in tote! Beautiful little area.

We couldn't figure out where the trail was supposed to continue, so we turned around at the falls (I'm not sure, but I think we found Barbara Falls, not South Fork Falls.) instead of continuing the loop. It was getting dark by the time we got there, though. The trail is probably much easier to find during the day. Pretty hike from what we could see. I'll have to come back during the day sometime to get the full experience.

Great trail and waterfall! We saw salmon swimming upstream in August. I’ve also went in February to photograph the frozen waterfall. Year round this one is beautiful!
