The Peterson Lake Trail begins at Glacier Highway mile 23.4 and ends at Peterson Lake Cabin. There are muddy sections throughout this trail and some slippery planks. The first two miles follow on the alignment of an old mining tram that was built around 1900. After the trail goes through the muskegs, the trail diverges from the mining tram and continues through the forest. Here the trail is eroded and there are a lot of exposed roots and rocks. The last half mile of the trail runs along Peterson Lake and is occasionally flooded when the lake level is high. Allow 2.5 - 3 hours to hike to the cabin with an overnight pack.

This trail is in great condition, other than some pretty muddy spots. Great place to camp overnight or have lunch, great views with a small boat for public use.

Gravel at first, plenty of board walk, and rocky/rooted terrain. Sitting on the dock was lovely at sunset but the dock and cabin are in the shadow, so it got chilly.

The first 2 miles of this trail is packed gravel and well maintained, making for a quick pace. The next 2½ miles are full of roots and rocks with a few short sections of planking that are in severe disrepair and can be extremely muddy/slippery during and after a good rain. Once you traverse the messy part and arrive at the cabin, it’s a pretty location. The forest service has a dock and a rowboat for use on the lake. The cabin itself is small, only sleeping a total of 6 campers. 2 double bunks, and 2 singles, 1 above each double. Making it awkward for those in the top bunk needing to get up during the night, and stepping on the person below. The outhouse was atrocious, it really could’ve used a couple bags of lime thrown down the shitter to help with the stench. For what they charge per night, they should at the very least provide cushions on the bunks and clean the outhouse once in awhile.

For the first mile and a half, the trail is nice, hard-packed gravel. The next bit (a little over a mile) alternates between a fairly rocky, root-strewn trail, and a raised boardwalk through some open meadows. The boardwalks are generally in pretty poor condition (rotten, mossy), but they’re good enough to keep your feet mostly dry. Eventually the trail veers closer to Peterson Creek, and it’s a beautiful hike through dappled sunlight with the sound of the water and a series of cascades. After about 3/4 of a mile, you get to the edge of the lake. Beautiful FS cabin with a nice little dock out front. Feels more like Maine than SE Alaska. Conventional wisdom says to hike the ridges when the sun is out, but this trail has a decent amount of sun exposure and lots of open space at the lake itself. A good alternative if you want to stay low on a sunny day.

Lovely mix of meadow, trees and creek to walk through or along. In spring, beware of posthole potential.

When you are in Juneau, hiking the trails away from town is well worth it - especially if you can rent a Forrest Service cabin for an overnight. Peterson lake is one of those. I completed this hike in a light rain which lent a great atmosphere. Several spots have blueberries right up to the trail. I filled a hat to share with the camp that night. The cabin on the lake was one of the newest FS cabins when I was there. A dock with an aluminum boat and paddles are available to explore to lake with.
