O'Malley Peak, Williwaw Lakes and Middle Fork Trail is a 10.2 mile lightly trafficked loop trail located near Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska that features a lake and is rated as difficult. The trail is primarily used for hiking.
Start at FlatTop trailhead, to Powerline Pass, up Little OMalley, then continue on across the ‘Ball Fields’ until you over look Willawa Lakes.
Absolutely beautiful. Great loop. Lots of flowers and the lakes are gorgeous. Has a steep climb and a steep decent on scree. A little tough on older knees but worth it.
This was so much fun! When you make it to williwaw lakes, go up as if you’re taking O’Malley peak back (you won’t actually have to climb all the way up. Just the hill before it) and you’ll see an UNREAL cobalt blue lake that actually doesn’t show up as water on this map. It was stunning.
The trail is in better than great condition. Really well maintained! There was one patch of snow still hanging on, but pretty packed down and we passed without any post holing. We got lucky with no bugs as well. Saw a brown bear around mile 4, but he was on the other side of the valley floor. It’s so green and lush out there it’s beyond beautiful! One thing to note is there is no shade covering the entire trail. We went when it was overcast, but if it’s a clear sunny day bring lots of water, sunscreen, etc.
