A little bit of mud at the beginning, but otherwise a well maintained and enjoyable trail. The drive from North Skilak road to the trail head was super rough, but I passed graters on my way out. There is a lot of burn on the road, but the trail is clear. LOTS of bear signs and my daughter and two dogs had an encounter near the lake on the Skilak side of the loop. BIG black bear. Not aggressive, but not moving - I’m assuming she had Cuba that I didn’t stick around to look for. Highly recommend for now, be loud, bring bear spray and don’t go when the salmon are running.

Love this trail, do it every year. Still super muddy most the way right now, lake is gorgeous as the world end. Toddler friendly, my 4 year old can do it. Did the entire thing including a half hour break at the shore in 2.5 hours. That time is with going at my toddlers pace. No signs of bear right NOW but there were moose tracks. I only wildlife we saw was a rabbit and eagles down at the end, wouldn't want anymore than that :)

Went in a perfect day! bugs weren't bad, weather was perfect, the trail was in great condition. Not really any over growth and the bugs weren't too bad either. the lake was a lot higher than usual and there wasn't much beach/shore area to play around on. Was relatively easy though

Easy trail walk with very pretty fields of wildflowers and nice lake and river views. Visited on July 9 and when we got close to the lake, the boardwalks were completely submerged so we had to walk through 2 feet of water.

Should definitely be rated easy, nice walk down to the lake and it's beautiful and quiet but preferred the view from the Skilak Lake lookout trail!

Beautiful trail, and easy-but saw a mama bear and her cub just a few feet off the trail and had to do a sharp about face, good thing it’s a loop trail!

Great hike. Cannot push a stroller or pull a wagon because through the marsh there are boards to walk on. Just a heads up for families. My 2.5 hiked the whole way there & some of the way back. Easy hike.
