This trail is located by the Independence Mine in Hatcher Pass. The trail is easy and fairly straight until you hit the boulder field where you will find some switchbacks as you gain elevation. It is easy to follow and in good condition. There is an old cabin along the trail and a boulder field towards the top that is very easy to manage. At the top, there is a crystal clear tarn and lots of places to relax by the water. Wildlife consists of birds and marmots.

Park in the Independence Mine visitors parking area uphill past the fee gate in summer months. The trailhead is clearly marked on the opposite side of the parking from the mine area.

Very easy trail. We made it in what felt like just a few minutes. It’s worth a hike even though it’s so short. Despite the light rain and fog, the views by the lake were amazing.

For someone not that well in shape it was a good challenge. Trail is a little confusing at one point but you figure it out as it’s open area. The lake at the end is beautiful. We were in a tight schedule so we couldn’t stay but would be a great place for a picnic.

Beautiful views, but I wouldn’t classify this as easy. Myself (24) and my father (69) completed this on a 70 degree day. Anything with switchbacks isn’t easy in my book. Pretty flat beginning. Staying on the trail near the boulder field is difficult as it is not well marked and there are dozens of short cut trails that are steep and muddy. Though once you get past the boulders, it’s easy hiking to the lake and a gorgeous view!

Nature tripsGreat!Muddy

Highly recommend for people with young kids! I carried my 1yr old in a carrier but my 3yr old managed just fine all on her own the entire trip. The lake was great. I would plan to take a picnic and eat while the kids enjoy the water. A few muddy spots that could be slick but overall very safe.

Great, easy trail with a slight elevation gain. Nice views and the lake is very cool to see. The trail is mostly well maintained with run off in some areas. Trekking poles were helpful for the rocks. The gate to get to the trailhead opens at 9A and closes at 7P.

A bit rainy so some of the areas near the top were a little slick but nothing too bad. Gorgeous views up top. Took a bit to find the trail head I’m not familiar with the area. Lake at the top is clear and peaceful. Trekking poles and hiking boots made it easier

the gate closes at 7pm, so we were on a time crunch and weren’t able to take it all in. but this is a beautiful trail overlooking independence mine, and the lake at the top is crystal clear.

Nice trail. Quite an uphill, but short with a beautiful lake in the top. Caught the rain, but it did not spoil the experience. Parked next to Independence Mine buildings-nice piece of history. Take a pen and cash-you put a parking fee to an envelope unless you have a pass.

There is a $5 parking fee, which goes to help upkeep the trails. Considering there are multiple trails AND the independence mine here, $5 is well worth it. Cash or card. Did it today and my 3 year old had no problem. There are a few spots which are a bit sketchy for kids who aren’t sure footed, but a little holding of a hand and they don’t even realize. If it’s rainy or had recently rained, expect a lot of very slick mud. The lake at the top is a gorgeous blue! Definitely going to go back
