I definitely should have had microspikes today. Compact snow and ice trail, well marked, well tracked. There was one moose on the mountain, but not close to the trail. Access up Canyon Road was pretty slick. I had to stop 3/4 mile below the trailhead (two-wheel drive), but 4-wheelers got up.

Trail is in decent condition. Some deep snow drifts, but the snow has a pretty good crust on it so no post holing. Definitely recommend this trail if you’re looking for a winter peak.

Definitely recommend having micro spikes. It might also be a good idea to grab some trekking poles. The trail was icy in places, but navigable.

BackpackingFeeGreat!No shade

First time doing this trail. Wasn’t easy but very doable. Zig zag up, counted maybe 14 switchbacks which made it easy as it was not straight up. Started to rain on the way down and got a little muddy. Very cloudy day today so the views were not the best but made for some good pics regardless.

I wouldn’t say that it’s easier than the front side. I would say the luxury of not having to climb over boulders make it so much better! Very good hike!!!!

HikingFeeGreat!No shade

It's perfect for a quick hike. Takes 1.5-2 hours depending on breaks, exploring the top, & overall pace. Nice, steady incline, but it's not too steep. Totally doable for beginners, too, I think if taken slow. Easy-to-follow switchbacks take you where you need to go, but toward the top one might lose the trail; no worries though since you just make your way up! Great views of Anchorage, Powerline valley, O'Malley Peak, etc... It's a good idea to bring a light jacket as it can get pretty windy up top. Only complaint is the parking situation as mentioned by many others on here. I imagine it gets nearly impossible to turn around in a big SUV or pickup when the area gets all clogged up. $5 fee unless you have the annual state park pass. Cash/check only.
