Trailhead is Matanuska Peak
Great trail with beautiful views all around. Pretty steep from the beginning, poles and cleats required.
*I am out of shape so read my review with that in mind* I went up the loop counter clockwise. Definitely need trekking poles and micro spikes or crampons in winter. I went up with only micro spikes and I slipped so many times. Just when you think the trail is going to open up and flatten out, you turn north and go straight up the side of the hill. It wasn’t very easy however, the rewards once you connect with Matanuska Peak Trail are totally worth it. It was snowing but you could still see the Matanuska River and Palmer. Coming down was easy. A couple times I sat and slid but for the most part it was quick. Not a trail for those with bad knees.
I would recommend this trail for anyone looking for a moderate, peaceful hike. It’s dog friendly. There is private property on each side. Steep at the beginning if you go straight up the first stretch. The halfway mark is just before a section of trail that slid down an embankment. Most of the nicest views are at the top. Nice quiet hike.
