This land was a cow pasture and held a couple of greenhouses when I was a child. A small home remains on the property.

As an aside - I wanted to record the route and love to use this app. Unfortunately this park/trail was difficult to find on this app and I believed it was altogether unlisted in AllTrails. Google maps says it is in Hoover/Birmingham so it would be more useful to list it there instead of "Oak Mountain." Also, I searched "Veterans Park" and it was not found. I actually found the trail listing by accident when searching Oak Mountain. A name update would be helpful to aid people passing through find this gem.

On to my thoughts: This park is excellent. Upkeep is clearly a priority. I saw only one full trash can. So many things to do here. There is beach volleyball. A large covered pavilion. A long finely graveled trail winds throughout the property - in sun and shade - perfect for walking your dog or taking a run. It diverges at multiple points, helping spread the visitors into their own private areas. The trail circles a pond - maybe an acre or more in size. Some banks lined by mature trees while others manicured perfectly. Swaths of green grass leading to the peaceful water's edge, inviting you to settle for awhile...or maybe throw out a stick for your pup. The trail passes a small structure labeled "Butterfly Garden" and a gentle creek as well. I should mention the large playground area near the parking lot for those of you with children. Everything about this park and trail is beautiful. We noted many people and a moderate number of large dogs there on this Friday afternoon between 3:30 and 5:30pm. Come to think of it, visitors could be a bit better about picking up after their dogs...But otherwise Wonderful!!

This trail is NOT in Oak Mountain State park although it is close by. Very easy trail around a little pond. Great beginners trail.
