The first half of the trail follows the Piper Intrepretive Trail and offers plenty of shade on a singletrack through mostly pine forests. There are scenic overlooks of the river and an opportunity to climb down to the riverside if you're ambitious. The second half of the trail is an old mining road. The road is rocky and does not offer any shade.

If you're looking for an improved trail with very light traffic, slight overgrowth, and beautiful scenery with a stunning view of the Cahava river at the end, this is your trail. Do not recommend doing the loop – the last 1.25 miles is nothing but former paved road that was grated and then had large (as in, twist your ankle large) gravel put on top of it. I rate the back half of the loop a "2.5" (it is an OK average view), but the first part ("Piper Interpretive") a 4.5… So 4 overall. "Easy" is the right rating, but there are some user created off–shoots and the climb to the observation area (improved platform) that are medium to hard…
