Getting There

Monte Sano State Park charges a fee to enter. Fees are $5/adult, $2/child, and $2 for seniors. You can also purchase a park specific annual pass for $100.

Monte Sano State Park Office (256)534-3757

The trailhead for the McKay Hollow Trail is on the bluff side of the Picnic Area in Monte Sano State Park. Park in the Picnic Area and walk down the pathway on the right side of the Large Pavilion. Signs marking the high bluff will direct you to the trail, just to the right of the Small Pavilion. Please note: When it has rained the rocks get slippery. The park suggests waiting several days after a rain due the the North Plateau being so close to the cliff.

A little muddy, but nothing that couldn’t be avoided. Super fun, some small scrambles, but not too tough with short breaks and water.

That first is correctly named 'Death Mike's but it was fun - just take your time & mind your step. Also trail head isn't easiest to find

When planning to hike this keep in mind that the park doesn’t open til 7 and I don’t think there’s anyone in the entrance booth until 8. Also, the parking lot closest to the trailhead doesn’t open til 8. If you want to go in before 8 take cash to pay entrance fee. I found a side street to park on and started on the North Plateau Loop right outside the entrance booth which hooked me up with McKays TH. I was looking for a difficult, technical hike - and for the area it probably is, but it didn’t seem that bad. Most of my hiking thus far as been done in the Rockies - so I’d say the hard rating is compared to other hikes in the area and maybe not a universal rating. In hindsight I wish I had hiked it as an out and back like AllTrails says instead of the loop like it shows on the map. Coming back up the initial descent would have made it more challenging than finishing on the South Plateau loop. Trail is marked with yellow blazes and fairly well marked but I did get off track in a couple places. Steep, rocky descent to bottom but after that the trail is mostly flat for quite a ways. Then obviously you have to ascend again but the climb up is less rocky and seemed more gradual. It was a very pretty hike with the Fall colors.

It was a great hike! Challenging in middle and a very fun and technical hike for most of it, but not too hard.

The trail was difficult. It has a steep decline and incline and very rocky. It goes down into a rocky valley which probably had a large stream running through it at one time. It is a little over 4 miles, so not very long. Beautiful scenery that includes a waterfall and big rocks on the mountain side. If you like challenging hikes, I highly recommend this one.

fantastic trail very challenging. there is a lot of moments of loose rock and very skinny trails with steep gains or loss of elevation. overall highly recommend for a nice short and challenging hike.

Class 3-4 terrain at the beginning, definitely a difficult hike, but so worth it. Beautiful views, some nice relaxing stretches between difficult sections, and well marked. Definitely recommend!
