Desoto Falls Bottom and Ice Cave is a 1.4 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Mentone, Alabama that features a waterfall and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking and nature trips.
The bluff line trail (pink and white blaze) was easier than expected, but the pink trail coming back out was quite an incline. We took the pink and white blazes first expecting more from the cave and wanting to have ample time to explore it. It was shallower than expected but still cool. The waterfall was great! Clear waters, amazing view from the basin, lots of big rocks to sit on. We had a small picnic by the end of the trail before heading back. Over all, a great hike. Already planning to bring friends back sometime.
Gorgeous diverse terrain reaching the bottom of the falls and a swimming hole that would be perfect on a warm day. We hiked day after rain and it was sprinkling the entire way with that I would say the hike is moderate. Def not strenuous! Have a good pair of shoes and a hiking pole/stick for balance if it’s muddy.
Took the pink blazed trail down and returned via the pink/white. The Icebox Cave is on the pink/white trail. It was very well marked. Gorgeous weather and not too many people out there today. The view from the bottom is worth the hike. It is a steep decline to get there though.
Well marked trail but all the leaves on it made it really slippery. A little overgrown in places too. We took the pink trail down to the awesome falls and white trail up again. Then we took the half mile upper trail for a higher view of the falls. But this trail did not take us to the viewing platform that you see from below. Not sure how to get to that.
This trail did not disappoint! I would rate it as moderately difficult as it is very rocky and pretty steep on the way back out. You definitely need proper shoes! The trail ends with a stunning view of the falls and has a great area to relax before heading back.
I started my recording after we had reached the end of the trail (we traveled the bottom river bed part on the way there) and turned back. We missed the icebox cave by taking the bottom loop, so we took the upper part back. We found a small cave that I thought may be the icebox cave and started my recording there. The actual featured cave is further along. Fantastic hike, we meandered and explored everything. You will be climbing some rocky parts, take a hiking stick ;)
This trail is fairly challenging at least on the way back. A good portion is at a very steep incline. Once the trail turns at the waters edge there are tons of rocks to walk through, around, and scramble over. The swimming at the falls is fantastic. Nice hike
Easy trail. A short hike to the ice box cave and goes to the despot waterfall.
