Pretty good trail. Not very difficult, but the blaze marking could be better. Easy walking this time of year.

HikingGreat!

Have to follow Cherokee Ridge Alpine Trail signs. Great short workout for me & my dog with a little bit of everything - lake views, rocks & a few inclines. Definitely coming back with my children so they can explore.

HikingGreat!

Well traveled trails, easy to navigate. Our first trip through was wonderful (January). Our two scent hounds loved the smells and trips past the water for a quick drink. Look forward to returning and using the other trails,

It took me a while to figure out the blazes on this trail. Although the map near the parking lot suggests that the blazes will be green, they’re actually either yellow or white, depending on which direction you’re headed. The white blazes aren’t well-maintained, so I recommend going in the direction that has the yellow blazes. At the trailhead, the sign tells you you can either go straight or go right to start the trail. I recommend straight.

HikingGreat!

we have done the other two trails of the Cherokee trail - this was my favorite by far. It was beautiful and had two beautiful sandy beaches to stop along the trail. We loved it. The only thing is there are a few places the trail is not marked clear or even very visible and if we hadn't had tge AllTrails map to look at, we would have gotten lost. So make sure you keep your app handy to look at where you are on this trail.

Although we have hiked the other trails that are a part of the Cherokee Ridge Alpine Trail network, this was our first time hiking the Kowalinga Bay loop. This section of the network is the most dense section but it also provides some of the best big lake views. The trail is well marked and maintained although there are a few carved off sections that caused us to pause for a moment to see which was the true trail. We opted to stay on the outermost portions of the trail in order to spend most of our time walking along the banks of the lake. There was also a nice small beach that would be perfect to eat lunch or wade in to the water. The incline for the last portion of the trail is winding but manageable. Overall it is a really nice trail.

I wanted a short trail. This loop is short at a little over 2 miles but be aware it is moderate because of steep inclines and descending trails. A few pretty lake views but overall not that impressive. Good work out but not really scenic.

Another great day of exploring Lake Martin’s shoreline and the surrounding bluffs. We linked the Cherokee Alpine Ridge Trail and the Kowaliga Bay Loop Trail for a total of 5.49 miles. Although not nearly as strenuous as the nearby Deadening Trail, the CART offered plenty of scenic views, rock gardens to climb up and over and a good assortment of small wildlife. Well maintained and marked.

Trail was fun with great scenery!! Watch for snakes along the water!! Not bad for children either. Took 5 kids between 8-13 and we all lived to tell about it.

It was a great trail overall. My gps tracked the mileage to be closer the 3.5 as opposed to 2.2. Some spots on the trail need improved marking, which may be how I ended with longer mileage. No big deal deal though; it was still a good trail with some nice views along the way.

Starts out at a wonderful overlook spot and descends to lakeside, making for a nice variety of views and terrain. The pine straw cover is particularly thick in some parts, and there are a few spots where you could make a wrong turn if you aren't looking for trail markers, but overall a great way to spend the afternoon! We will definitely head back to add this loop in with the others in the area to make a more extensive day hiking.

Hiking

I just started hiking so this trail was very difficult for me, but it was worth the effort for the beautiful lake views for most of the hike. I felt that some areas of the trail were really narrow and a few areas I was confused as to where the trail continued, but I found my way. The parking area has a beautiful overlook of Lake Martin and there are different hiking trails that vary from 1 mile to 7 miles, easy to moderate.

Gorgeous hike with plenty of lake water for your dogs to drink. Well marked and well maintaned trail. I hiked the Alpine Ridge Trail plus Kowaliga Bay trail for around 5 miles in about 2.5 hours (moving pretty quickly without stopping for breaks but without rushing). Some uphill and downhill but nothing strenous compared to hiking in mountainous areas or high elevations. No restrooms/port-a-potties or trash cans. Pack in pack out. No camping. Lovely views and picnic tables at parking area. Dog friendly.

First to Review

Hiked this with my sister in the winter after Christmas. It was cold for Alabama but not too bad. Warmed up pretty quick once we got going. It is rated easy to moderate but if you are out of shape (like me) it is hard. Lots of hills and beautiful views. Can't wait to hike it in the summer. Lots of virws of Lake Martin and rocky areas making for a fun and challenging hike. Trails go from 1 mile up to 7.5 miles. Brand new picnic tables and resting area at trail head. Great trail.
