Great walk if you are fed up with all the amazing mountain walks in Switzerland ;) This walk gives high level views over Zurich and is an easy stroll. I walked the route there and back to double up the distance and finish back at the start point, Uetliberg.
Andrew Carringer wrote in August 2018: "...in August apparently it'll sound like a warzone with the number of people hunting/shooting recreationally all around. That aspect was pretty strange." Indeed it would be...! In Switzerland shooting practice is mandatory for members of the Swiss Army (i.e. most able-bodied men in a certain age group, as it is of the militia type). This practice is performed at certain weekends in the shooting range of one's domicile. Because of the noise this causes, the firing ranges are as a rule far away from the village, somewhere at the edge of the woods. This is a lovely walking-tour -- I can truly recommend it. And, believe me, you don't need to worry about being shot, ;-) .
I also went from Sellenbüren, but there is no public parking at the location indicated by E Skill so I had to park in the lot on the main street in Sellenbüren. This only added 5 minutes to the hike, however, and I think this is a great way to get up the mountain if you have your own car. Very quiet and lots of stairs. 35 minutes to get to the top and the views are awesome. I had a bratwurst and some homemade apple juice from a stand at the top, but there are also a couple nice restaurants with views if you want to stay longer. The trail at the top is more like a road with streetlights and many more people. A great diversion from Zurich.
This alternative trail I took starts by parking the car at this address: Hüttenrain 46 8143 Sellenbüren Switzerland And then hiking up. This is you are driving and want to park your car somewhere instead of figuring out transit. In my case I had a rental car so I wanted to not have to pay for parking somewhere. The view at the top is phenomenal! One of the best I have seen and I have summited a number of mountains in the Pacifc Northwest of Canada and USA, granted it was a clear and sunny day so weather might hamper the view. I paid 5 euros to get to the view point tower at the top.
Not too hard to do except for maybe the stairs for some people. But at least there were stairs as opposed to just steep hills. Great views of the city; just realize that if you hike this on a weekend in August apparently it'll sound like a warzone with the number of people hunting/shooting recreationally all around. That aspect was pretty strange.
Absolutely beautiful walking along the cliff face overlooking the lake was fantastic. After reading other posts on different sites we took the ferry over ($32 CHF per person round trip) and then discovered we had to purchase a train ticket for another ($50 CHF per person round trip) I would have drove up knowing the costs. Then we walked to the bottom of the lift ($10 CHF per person one way) then walked the trail back to the bottom of the lift and down. The portion around the lift was my favorite part. We only took the lift for the experience but it was nice.
