Hard but worth every ounce of effort. Followed the trail anti clockwise after taking the cable car. A stunning trek; one of the best.

Faaantastic hike! The tanzbodeli (sp? Sorry!) summit is an awesome spot. Also, the gondola to gimmelwald is only 6 Francs :)

Walked from murren and then went counterclockwise, Gimmelwald, tanzboden, hotel obersteinberg (lunch), down the valley to stechelberg (which was a total of 10.5 miles of hiking); then rode the gondola back up to murren. Note: this distance doesn’t include the out/back view point at tanzboden, nor the out/back to the lake at oberhornsee. We skipped both of those. We had beautiful weather at the end of September, and it’s a great hike. Good mix of shade and views. We picked the counterclockwise route to get the climb done early, and have the descent be a bit less steep. We’re glad we did. Lunch was amazing at hotel oberstienberg. We had wine, soup and a sandwich. Great food, prices, and service. Trail was well maintained, and marked.

This was a fantastic trail and should be on your list if you are in the area. Honestly, one of the most rewarding and beautiful trails I have ever done. You get everything from fantastic mountain views, waterfalls, river, green valley, forest, and a 360 degree panorama. It was breathtaking and in a very different part of the valley. A couple of notes. We started in Gimmelwald and went counterclockwise on the trail (Gimmelwald, Tanzboden, Obersteinberg, Oberjornsee, Stechelberg). It was very steep and hard. This is a smaller elevation change, but is very quick. You are pretty much going straight up. We completed the entire trail in 8 hrs with plenty of breaks. It will be longer if you go all the way to the lake. However, we were told it wasn't there a decided to skip it. Tanzboden was an amazing 360 view, but a climb with some more scramble parts to get up. The map on this site is wrong in that it indicates a path going from the top of Tanzboden to Obersteinberg; there is not one, you need to go down the way you came in. This is indicated on the paper maps provided at stations but not on this map. Wear good shoes and prepare your knees for a long descent. Hiking poles will help. Long sections are exposed above the tree lines so be prepared for potential weather changes

I spent 7 full days in this area of the Canton of Berne hiking various trails, but this one, the Oberhornesee Loop was the superlative trek amongst all the others – it’s the ‘must see’ and ‘must do’ trail in this entire area, and, yes I recommend you hike the entire loop as it seems most people just hike some section of it and then double back, not wanting to go for ‘the full monty’. You’ll want to do this loop in a counterclockwise direction for 2 reasons: 1) the cable car trolley is on the starting end for this direction, which will give you that initial 500-meter boost (~1,600 ft) of the total 1,400 meters of ‘up’ (~4,600 ft), so that you will only effectively have remaining about 925 meters (3,000 ft) of ‘up’ [see that straight line on the map at the beginning?!] and 2) you won’t need to worry about catching that last trolley down as you will end up on the valley floor when traveling in the CC direction. There is a bus on that end to take you back into Lauterbrunnen that runs later than the trolley does. You also may need some help to find the track after getting to the trolley. You’ll want to take the first stop for the trolley ride, as it goes further up the mountain. After exiting the trolley, you may need some help to find the trail, as it is not well marked at the beginning. As the map shows, you’ll actually start by heading west and going down into that 1st drainage and then climbing up on the other side headed in a southerly direction. After climbing that first big section, you’ll run into a junction. Make sure you take the route headed south, not the other one headed west, although it may also loop back… Having a compass with you will help. Note: about 1/3 of the way on this loop, you’ll run into a lodge and restaurant! It’s super – that’s Switzerland! Great place to recharge, and fill up the canteen with fresh drink, and get yourself a bottle of wine as well! You’ll lose count of the waterfalls on this loop – it’s just one after another… Make sure you go on a good-weather day and don’t forget your camera! There’s also a small lake about half-way in which people commonly swim.

This trail is a MUST-DO if you are in the area. Highly recommend starting at Gimmelwald instead of Stechelberg (counter-clockwise loop). We were happy we made that call after seeing people struggling up from Stechelberg. The first hour and a half is pretty steep up through the forest, but once you top off at tree line, the views are out-of-this-world! Oberhornsee Lake in and of itself is a bit disappointing (smaller that we expected) but the amount of scenery along the entire route more than makes up for it. Pretty long hike - AllTrails says around 10 miles but I think it’s more like 13 if you go all the way to the lake. We started at 6:15 from Murren and got down to Stechelberg at 2:00, with a 45 minute break at the lake and a few others on the way up.

First time in Switzerland and this trail did not disappoint. The views the entire way up were spectacular. We had a mostly clear day which was important as there is so much to see around you the entire time. Took about 3/4 hours to get up and then make the way to the lake (worth going for a dip - very refreshing on the body!). 2 hours to get back down and with the lake included it was a 20km exercise. Highly recommend.

Hiking

This is an amazing hike that I completed on 29Jun2019. I started in Gimmelwald, which is a very quaint small Swiss village with horses, goats and cows in the center of town. From there I hiked to Tanzbodeli, which is spectacular. There is a short but steep climb up, but you are very richly rewarded once you get there. At the top of the climb there is an abrupt transition from a steep pitch to a flat open field of wildflowers with a 360 view of mountains, glaciers and a view down the Lauterbrunnen valley. From there I headed to the Oberhornsee, on the way there is a fantastic little hotel/restaurant called the Ober Steinberg where I got an enormous slice of fruit tart covered with whipped cream. The Oberhornsee is a very small glacial lake which the locals like to swim in despite the water being close to freezing. I backtracked north from the Oberhornsee then turned toward Im Tal and Lager, but if I had to do it over again, I would have headed east from Oberhornsee and crossed the river above the Schmadribachfall, but either way is great. The trails are very well marked and very well maintained. There were gorgeous wildflowers and butterflies everywhere in late June.

Hiking

An absolutely amazing hike, up with the best I have ever completed. Ive been to Switzerland 5 times so I am fairly accustomed to the landscape, but this hike took my breath away yet again! Countless waterfalls (50+), Oberhornsee lake, a herd of Ibex, snow storm’s and (distant) avalanches... what else could you want!! We completed this hike twice, 4 days apart, due to the first hike being completed in clouds with close to 20-50m visibility in below freezing conditions, and knowing what switzerland is, I knew we were walking past some jaw-dropping views, plus the reason we did this hike was because I wanted to hike to the glacier/point where the Lauterbrunnen River starts, and having poor conditions meant we were unable to find the answer. A few days later we had a sunny clear day and completed the hike again which showed us the beauty that was originally being hidden from us. We had no regrets about doing the same hike again as this time our eyes were glued to the scenery, and we even went for a swim (twice) at Oberhornsee and enjoyed the view for hours! Hike 1 - Loop (20km & 1300m) : Stechelberg-Trachsellauenen-Obersteinberg-Oberhornsee-Schmadribachfall-Schmadrihütte-Stechelberg Hike 2 - Return w/miniloop (24km & 1200m) : Gimmelwald-Obersteinberg-Oberhornsee-Schmadribachfall-Oberhorn-Obersteinberg-Gimmelwald Difficulty : Hard, both are very steep at times, tough and gruelling but well worth the result and views at the end. Just prepare your knees for the way down :) I would recommend doing the Hike 1 hopefully on a clear sunny day so you can swim at Oberhornsee, but if its a cloudy day and its your only chance, still do it, you will not regret it!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!

Absolutely stunning hiking trail! My partner and I did it twice while in Switzerland this past week. The first time it was really cloudy and misty the whole time and we could not see all the views in front of us, but when we got to the top it started to snow! It was magical! Since it was so cloudy we did it again on a clear day and it was well worth it! My new favourite hike in Switzerland!
