Ella Rock Trail is a 3.3 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Kithal Ella, Badulla, Sri Lanka that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking.
Take the waterfall road from Ella town to get on the railway track and follow it to just before Kital Ella railway station. Trailhead begins on the left hand side just after crossing the railway bridge before Kital Ella. Lots of different alternate routes up and stalls selling fresh juice and coconuts for a reward after a hike. Go early (ie. 6:30am) to avoid congestion on Ella Rock at the top. You can catch a tuk tuk back to Ella for around 600 rupees after if you don’t want to walk the railway track the whole way back after the descent.
Great trail. Was 10.5km round trip from Ella’s edge resort. Took us 2.5hrs for the whole thing at a decent pace. The trail map is super accurate and very easy to follow. Just get on the train tracks wherever you leave from and you’ll easily get to the trailhead. The last ~1.5km to the top is steeper but the rest is very easy. If you go pass Ella’s rock for another ~500m you get to a small cave temple with great views. Worth stopping at both.
Amazing hike that started at 3AM in the dark. Most beautiful sunrise I'd ever seen. Not too many wildlife. Did not encounter any reptiles.
Great trail that started light through a tea plantation then eventually became quite steep for awhile. Keep pushing to reach the top as the views are well worth it. You can see the entire city of Ella as well as Little Adam’s Peak. Bring plenty of water. The entire steep climb is in the forest so shade is welcomed!
