The beautiful mountain lakes of Enol and Ercina are one of the main access points to the Picos de Europa, so can be quite crowded in high season - but this short loop with exquisite views takes you away from the crowds, through woodland and traditional settlements. Try to go on a clear day. If you happen to be there during high season (approx. July 1-Sept 15), you will have to park and catch the bus from Covadonga Sanctuary up to Lake Ercina. Outside of that timeframe you can drive straight up and park at Lake Ercina. There is a great restaurant at the start of the trail for food/beer/wine before or after the hike. The hike takes you along the right side of Lake Ercina and then up and over a pass. At around 1.2 miles the trail splits. Take the trail to the left marked Bosque Palomberu for a short jaunt through one of the most special forests you will ever visit. It feels as if Faeries will appear out of the lichen and moss covered rock outcroppings surrounding the gorgeous old trees. At 1.7 miles you go right on the road to lake Enol and at 2.3 miles take the path to the right which allows you to walk along the left side of Lake Enol. At 2.9 miles the stone path veers from the road and heads off to the right to take you up and over back to Lake Ercina.
