This route is part of a multi week long walk, along the Camino Primitivo, also known as the Primitive Way or the Original Way. The Camino Primitivo was the first route to Santiago de Compostela, a pilgrimage journey that begins in Oviedo and goes west to Lugo and then south to Santiago de Compostela, joining the more popular Camino Frances in Melide. It is considered one of the toughest out of all the Camino routes, because of the many steep uphills and downhills. It can be done at a variety of paces and starting points. Legend has it that the remains of the Saint Apostle Santiago are buried there. Every spring and summer, many people follow its routes as a form of spiritual path or retreat for their spiritual growth. It is also popular with hiking and cycling enthusiasts and organized tour groups.
